DVD and Blu-ray Releases for April 26th, 2011

It's a horrible week for DVD / Blu-ray releases. According to Amazon.com there are over 500 DVD and Blu-rays coming out. However, there are no first run releases in that group. Zero. There are releases in the top ten list that during a normal week I would skip over in order to keep the list to a manageable length. It does make choosing the Pick of the Week relatively easy, as only one release, Human Planet on DVD or Blu-ray, comes close. And it is better to grab the show on Blu-ray.

It's a bad week for first run releases on Blu-ray, but a good week for fans of Criterion Collection or Anime. Sadly, that's a terrible trade off if you are looking for high sales.
A South Korea horror / comedy about a killer boar. I might still get a copy of this movie; let's hope so, as it looks like it could be a fun ride.
This is a great show, but since season five is filming, there's little reason to buy this box set. When the complete series Megaset comes out, it could be worth it. That will depend on the price and what you get.
One of the longest running Anime shows of all time. It has also been re-cut, re-dubbed, and re-released so many times that it is hard to keep track at this point.
A mother has to deal with changes when her autistic daughter grows up and starts to become more independent. The reviews were excellent, if not numerous, while the DVD has a making of featurette. Worth picking up.
It has been more than five years since season one came out on DVD, so if this season doesn't sell well, I expect Warner Bros. to sell the home market rights to a distributor that specializes in low-budget releases.
From the people who brought us earth. This is enough to convince a lot of people to buy the DVD / Blu-ray. Add in the few reviews I've seen and it goes from must have to Pick of the Week material.

I think if you called you girlfriend a "gumiho", she'd slap you. However, a gumiho is a mythological creature that looks like a fox with nine tails, which is the evolved form of Vulpix. Actually, it has nothing to do with Pokemon and is a romantic comedy with a fish out of water story. All of the reviews I've read have been positive and it's worth checking out. The price is a little high compared to most TV on DVD releases, but it is an import, so that tends to be the case.
A very popular Anime series, but I'm still a little surprised how high it is ranked on this week's list of new releases.
The original Sniper wasn't a big hit, nor was it a great movie, but they keep making direct-to-DVD sequels, so clearly someone thinks there's still a market for the franchise.

Two guys in serious need of money decide to become human guinea pigs. That has bad idea written all over it. Bad idea, but good show. I might be able to get a screener for this film, but it might be a bit late.

A three-hour mini-series based on the hugely popular TV series from the 1970s. Most reviews I've seen can be summed up as, "Good, but not as good as the original." That said, the original is considered a classic so I don't think many were expecting this version to be as good. If you are fan of the original, or of costume dramas in general, it is at least worth a rental.
