Per Theater Chart: State Makes Senna See Red

August 24th, 2011

Red State continued its run of special engagements this past weekend earning $25,800 in one theater. The only other film to reach the $10,000 mark was Senna, which earned an average of $11,365 in 14 theaters.

None of the rest of the new limited releases came close to the $10,000 mark. Mozart's Sister came the closest with an average of $4,864 in seven theaters, while The Last Circus was right behind with $4,757 in one theater. Amigo opened with an average of $3,732 in ten theaters. 5 Days of War was next with an average of $3,127 in two theaters. Griff the Invisible and Flypaper both missed the Mendoza Line with $848 and $549 respectively.

This past week also saw milestones reached for several Per Theater Charts alumni:

  • In A Better World just crossed $1 million since last week.
  • The Devil's Double just made it over $1 million over the weekend, but that's likely as far as it will go.
  • Red State still hasn't started its regular theatrical release, but it has already earned more than $1 million in special engagements.
  • The Guard also topped $1 million and it has a very good chance of reaching $2 million before long.
  • Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara actually did reach $3 million. The film has shown amazing legs for a Bollywood release.
  • Sarah's Key had the best single weekend of its run, and that helped it surpass $3 million in total. Getting to $4 million is practically guaranteed.
  • Midnight in Paris became the first limited release to reach $50 million this year, and the first in Woody Allen's career. The film has made more money than many wide releases, like The Dilemma, and several films that opened in saturation level theater counts, like Scream 4.
