DVD and Blu-ray Releases for November 2nd, 2010

November 2, 2010

It's a good week in terms of quality as the biggest hit and the best movie of the year hits the home market this week. However, it appears that release might have scared away the competition. Of course, that release is Toy Story 3, and the 4-Disc Blu-ray / DVD Combo Pack, which is not only the Pick of the Week, it might be the Pick of the Year.

Note: This DVD made its home market debut on the 19th.

Baz Lurhman Double-Shot - Buy from Amazon: Romeo+Juliet and Moulin Rouge!
A couple weeks ago the final two films of the Red Curtain Trilogy were released on Blu-ray. These two stylish films seem tailor-made for High Definition, but do these Blu-rays do the films justice? Check out our review for my opinion.

Beverly Hills 90210: Season Ten - Buy from Amazon
I can't believe this show lasted a decade on the air. However, even most hardcore fans will admit it had gone down hill by this point. Even so, most will still want to complete their collections.

The Bing Crosby Collection - Buy from Amazon
Some of Bing Crosby's earliest films, which makes this DVD important for collectors, even if it doesn't include his best known or more beloved films.

Blu-ray Releases - Buy from Amazon: The Bridge on the River Kwai, Centurion, Christmas Cottage, Disney WOW, Goonies: 25th Anniversary, IMAX: Dinosaurs Alive 3D, IMAX: Grand Canyon Adventure 3D, IMAX: Wild Ocean 3D, The Pacific, Phil Collins: Going Back - Live at the Roseland Ballroom, The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Concerts: 25th Anniversary, The Sound of Music, The Sound of Music: Limited Edition Collector's Set, Toy Story 3: Combo Pack, Toy Story 3, Toy Story Trilogy Box Set, V: Season One, Van Gohh: A Brush With Genius, White Christmas, and The Wiz
This week there is a quite massive list of Blu-rays coming out, including a number that are absolutely worth picking up. That said, it still feels like the list can be divided into two groups: Toy Story 3 and The Rest. Toy Story 3 is just miles ahead of the rest.

Care Bears: Giving Festival Movie - Buy from Amazon
The screener arrived late, so I wasn't able to get to the review. I'll get to it later this week.

Cars Toon: Mater's Tall Tales - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
I'm not sure why I didn't get this to review. I hope it is just late, as I've reviewed everything else Pixar has put out.

Centurion - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
Not the only recent film to deal with roughly the same time period, but like The Last Legion, it wasn't able to find an audience here. Perhaps it will have an easier time finding an audience on the home market, but until the screener arrives, I won't be able to tell if it deserves to.

Chitty Chitty Bang Bang - Blu-ray - Buy from Amazon
It has been more than 50 years since this musical was first released. How well has it held up over those years? Read our review for my opinion.

Christmas Releases - Buy from Amazon: Care Bears: Giving Festival Movie, Chilltown Christmas, Christmas Cottage (Blu-ray),Christmas in the Clouds, TV Sets: Holiday, White Christmas (Blu-ray), and White Christmas (DVD)
This week's selection of Christmas releases is highlighted by White Christmas on Blu-ray, which is really the only one that stands out as worth picking up.

Deadliest Catch: Season Six - Buy from Amazon
Great show, weak DVD. In fact, grabbing it from the Network's official site might be worth the extra cost, as it comes with a bonus disc.

Doctor Who - Buy from Amazon: Story 79: Revenge of the Cybermen and Episode 154: Silver Nemesis
Two more Doctor Who stories are coming out on DVD this week. Unfortunately they are both on the mediocre side.

The Facts of Life: Season Five - Buy from Amazon
I think this is the season things started to go weird on this show, as it was no longer set in a boarding school and Mrs. Garrett bought a bakery. Since this is only the halfway point of the series, it lasted a long time after the original premise was exhausted.

Frank Sinatra: Concert Collection - Buy from Amazon
14 hours of concerts on 7 discs, all for just $60. That's an incredible deal.

The Fugitive: Season Four, Volume One - Buy from Amazon
The penultimate DVD release for this series, at least until the Megaset shows up. I'm still waiting on the screener, but hopefully it will arrive soon.

The Goonies - 25th Anniversary Edition - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
This movie is 25 years old? I suddenly feel very old. It's a very entertaining movie, and I would argue underrated among critics, while the Blu-ray is worth picking up.

Hannah Montana: Who Is Hannah Montana - Buy from Amazon
The latest single-disc release for this show. I'm not sure what episodes are on this DVD or how they compared to the previous releases, and I won't until the screener arrives.

Highlander Double-Shot - Blu-ray - Buy from Amazon: Highlander and Highlander 2: The Quickening
This franchise began nearly 25 years ago and since then has spawned countless sequels, TV shows, cartoons, comics, games, etc. Clearly it has fans, but how well does it make the transition to High Definition? Check out our review for my opinion.

Note: This DVD made its home market debut on the 15th.

How To Train Your Dragon - Buy from Amazon: Single-Disc DVD, Two-Disc DVD, or Blu-ray / DVD Combo Pack
This film earned some of the best reviews of the year. Is it truly one of the best movies, or is it merely better than critics were expecting? Read our review for my opinion.

LeapFrog: Learning Set: Volume 2 - Buy from Amazon
Just a quick note that the screener arrived late so I will get to it later this week.

Let's Spend the Night Together - Buy from Amazon
Not the only Rolling Stones concert film to hit the home market recently. So what songs are in the set, and are they enough to make the DVD worth picking up? Check out our review to find out.

Mad About You: Season Five - Buy from Amazon
This show was amazingly popular when it aired on TV, but it has not really been given its due on the home market. The bargain basement price is welcome, even if many fans would prefer to pay more and get some special features.

My Super Psycho Sweet 16: Part 2 - Buy from Amazon
A Teenage Slasher that aired on MTV recently. Normally this genre is all about "Boobs & Blood", but since you can't show either on MTV, I'm not sure fans of these films will be that interested. That said, the original did earn better than average reviews for the genre, so it might be worth checking out.

The Pacific - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
This mini-series is a follow-up of sorts to Band of Brothers. Amazingly, this film performed even better at the Emmys, earning 24 nominations and winning 8 of them. If you own Band of Brothers you will want to buy this one as well, while the Blu-ray is the better deal.

Not Of This Earth - Buy from Amazon
This is the 1988 version with Traci Lords and not the original. Is this version worth checking out? Or maybe even picking up? Won't know until the screener arrives.

Roger Corman Double-Feature: The Terror Within & Dead Space - Buy from Amazon
Two more B-movies from the King of B-movies, Roger Corman. Are either of them worth checking out? And is the combined value worth picking up? Read our review for my opinion.

The Sound of Music - 45th Anniversary - Buy from Amazon: Two-Disc Blu-ray / DVD Combo Pack or Blu-ray
One of the most acclaimed musicals of all time and one of the biggest box office hits of all time. Will I be won over by this film like so many others? And more importantly, does the High Definition debut do the film justice? Check out our review to find out.

Note: This DVD made its home market debut on the 12th.

Strikeforce - Buy from Amazon
The MMA league's first DVD release arrived a little late, but now that it got here, was it worth the wait? Read our review to find out.

Toy Story 3 - Buy from Amazon: DVD, 2-Disc Blu-ray, or 4-Disc Blu-ray / DVD Combo Pack
It's the biggest hit of the year, as well as the best-reviewed wide release of the year. But does the home market releases do it justice? Check out our review to find out. Also coming out this week is a franchise box set, which is a pretty good value, if you don't have any of the films on Blu-ray already.

TV Series Megaset - Buy from Amazon: The Larry Sanders Show, Nip / Tuck, The Red Green Show: The Toddlin' Years, and Wild America
A couple of notes regarding this week's selection. Firstly, I hope to be getting The Larry Sanders Show to review, but the screener is late. Secondly, The Red Green Show is not technically a full series Megaset, but a multi-season Megaset. Still a good deal for fans of the show.

V: Season One - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
Fans of this show must feel relieved that it survived for a second season. (It came down to this show and FastForward.) But it will be in danger of being canceled from the very first episode when the new season starts in January. Buying the DVD or Blu-ray right away might help convince the studio to support it more going forward, but I'm not sure there are enough fans to help it get a third season no matter what they do.

Note: This DVD made its home market debut on the 12th.

Warren Miller: Dynasty - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
Celebrating the 60th anniversary of Warren Miller films. The director has long since retired, but his name lives on. Does the latest movie to bear his name do his legacy justice? Check out our review to find out.

Winnebago Man - Buy from Amazon
A documentary about a man who became famous for starring in a viral video, which seems like a commonplace thing to do, but he did it before the internet existed. The film earned excellent reviews, so hopefully it will be able to find an audience on the home market, as it wasn't really able to do so theatrically.

Note: This DVD made its home market debut on the 5th.

The Wubbulous World of Dr. Seuss: There's Nothing to Fear in Here - Buy from Amazon
This review is almost a month late, but in my defense, the DVD arrived almost a month late. Hopefully by this time next week I will be completely caught up with late reviews. ... Should be easy, as long as no more late screeners arrive.
