DVD Sales - 12 Rounds Nearly Knocked Out

July 15, 2009

While 12 Rounds may have led all new releases to capture top spot on this week's sales chart, its performance is not one that will be fondly remembered. It sold just 209,000 units and generated $3.13 million in consumer spending at retail. Meanwhile, Princess Protection Program placed second with 193,000 units sold, but it was ahead of 12 Rounds in terms of revenue with $3.38 million. However, the top release in terms of dollars was Entourage - The Complete Fifth Season, which made $4.05 million from 167,000 units. The best holdover was Gran Torino, which placed fourth with 147,000 units and $2.32 million for the week and 2.99 million units and $46.27 million after a month of release. Rounding out the top five was Confessions of a Shopaholic with 141,000 units / $2.36 million for the week and 559,000 units and $9.54 million after two.

Just missing the top five was The Jonas Bothers - The Concert Experience with 138,000 units / $2.48 million, which was enough for sixth place. Stargate - Atlantis - The Complete Fifth Season was the next best new release, landing in eighth place with 106,000 units / $3.30 million, while Street Fighter - The Legend of Chun Li was right behind with 93,000 units / $1.60 million. The only other new release to chart was Eastbound & Down - The Complete First Season, which earned 15th place with 59,000 units while generating $966,000 in opening week revenue.

Moving onto Blu-ray, we find mixed numbers. On the one hand, overall Blu-ray sales were down 26% to $10.7 million for the week, which is the slowest week since early March. However, this was still 77% more than the same weekend last year. Compared to DVD, Blu-ray represented 6.9% of total sales and 10% of the top 20 comparison. These numbers are not great, but while new releases took the top three spots on the DVD sales chart, of those three releases, two of them didn't even have a Blu-ray edition. Furthermore, four of the seven news releases to chart this week were also DVD only, so it comes as no surprise Blu-ray sales were light. The best-selling Blu-ray release of the week was 12 Rounds at just 32,000 units. On the other hand, Street Fighter - The Legend of Chun Li sold just 20,000 units, but that represented 17% of total sales, which is solid.
