DVD Sales - Cloverfield Claws its Way to the Top

May 5th, 2008

There were only a handful of new releases to chart this week, but we did have a new number one seller. Cloverfield started its home market run with $16.64 million in revenue from 1.04 million units sold. Juno settled into second place with 522,000 units sold for a total of 1.98 million units and revenue of $34.31 million. The only other new release in the top five was Charlie Wilson's War, which opened in third place with 448,000 units sold for $7.64 million. Aliens vs. Predator - Requiem was pushed down into fourth place with 329,000 units / $6.29 million in sales for the week for totals of 925,000 units and $17.77 million after two. Rounding out the top five was Alvin and the Chipmunks with 287,000 units for total earnings of $78.94 million from 4.78 million units sold.

There were only two other new releases to chart with One Missed Call placing seventh with 173,000 units and $3.46 million in sales and The Orphanage placing twelfth with 105,000 units and $2.10 million.

One final note, I Am Legend became the first film to crack $100 million in sales during 2008.

Moving onto Blu-ray, the format took 93% of the high definition market, while DVD took 94% of the Top 20 comparison. Since the number one DVD of the week was not released on Blu-ray, the lack of movement in the DVD / Blu-ray ratio is good news for the format.
