It's War Out There on the Per Theater Chart

May 28, 2008

The $10,000 club was a little more crowded than expected with a few surprise entries, but there was no surprise on top. Not only did Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull top the overall box office chart, it also came in first place on the per theater average chart with $23,507 over the three-day weekend, and nearly $30,000 over four. The Edge of Heaven opened with $18,593 in one theater, which is made even more impressive since it opened on a Wednesday. War, Inc. opened to weak reviews, but managed a surprisingly strong per theater average of $17,668. The final film in the $10,000 club was A Jihad for Love with $10,519 over three days and $17,284 including its box office over Wednesday and Thursday.

No other new release topped $10,000, but The Children of Huang Shi did reasonably well with $6,108. Insidious and Twisted: A Balloonamentary were neck and neck with $2,969 and $2,354 respectively. Meanwhile, box office numbers were not release for Postal. It was partially self-distributed, which may mean the numbers will take a little longer to come in. Or it may mean it did so poorly they won't release the numbers ever.

This past week also saw milestones reached for a few Per Theater Chart alumni:

  • Redbelt did hit $2 million, but it has nearly disappeared from theaters.
  • Then She Found Me reached $2 million over the weekend, barely, but should have one or two more milestones ahead of it.
  • Young @ Heart topped $2 million early in the weekend and after Monday is already more than half way to $3 million.
  • The Visitor remained in the top ten for a second week while reaching $4 million during its run.
  • It's been close to a month since its last milestone, but The Counterfeiters managed to make it all the way to $5 million over the weekend.
