Per Theatre Chart is Sweet as Candy

April 18, 2006

Hard Candy easily won the race on the per theatre charts, taking in nearly $60,000 in 2 theatres for an average of $29,025. Friends with Money slipped to second place with a still impressive $17,611 average in 42 theatres, which bodes well for Friday when it is scheduled to open in several hundred more theatres. The only other movie in the $10,000 club was the overall box office leader, Scary Movie 4, with $11,167.

Other new releases this week include strong performances by both Kinky Boots with $8,614 and The Notorious Bettie Page with $7,157. Both La Mujer de Mi Hermano at $4,945 and Kekexili at $4,229 had average starts while Hum Ko Deewana Kar Gaye and Look Both Ways struggled with $2,785 and $2,215 respectively. They were both miles ahead of the $886 per theatre average earned by Herbie Hancock: Possibilities, which was released on DVD today.

This past week also saw milestones reached for a couple Per Theatre Charts alumni:

  • Combine La Mujer de Mi Hermano's nearly $5,000 per theatre average with a theatre count over 200 and you have a $1 million weekend and the film's first major milestone. Even assuming the film has short legs like most niche market films have, and this is its best weekend, it should still reach more milestones before its run is over.
  • Friends with Money also topped $1 million over the weekend, but unlike the previous film, it should continue to grow.
  • As expected, Thank You for Smoking reached $10 million over the weekend, and should still have enough in its tank to expand slightly. But both the top 5 and 2,000 theatres seem out of reach at this point.
