Numbers Readers Predict Aviator to Win Best Picture, Another Snub for Martin Scorsese

February 27, 2005

Our Predict the Academy Awards Competition is closed to new entries, and we're ready to predict winners in tonight's Oscar ceremony. Our predictions are based on votes by over 1,000 Numbers readers who entered the competition this year - a record entry.

The Aviator is predicted to be the big winner on the night, picking up a total of 6 Oscars, including the coveted Best Picture award and a Best Supporting Actress for Cate Blanchett.

Million Dollar Baby looks to be headed towards a slate of individual awards. In the Leading Actress category, Hilary Swank is predicted to take the honors. Morgan Freeman is tipped to get a Supporting Actor gong. And finally, Clint Eastwood is predicted to win Best Director by a very narrow margin over Martin Scorsese.

The support for Eastwood's victory is based on his awards already this season (including the DGA Best Director award). Scorsese, however, has never won an Oscar, and will probably get a significant vote based on his body of work. This looks like the closest race of the night.

The run-away winner of the night looks like being Jamie Foxx, who gets a nearly 70% score for Best Actor. In an interesting year, with no box office blockbuster looking to sweep the board, he's probably the only racing certainty in the field.
