Phoenix is Reborn on the Home Market

March 12th, 2005

Note: No, I didn't space this weekend and forget to do the Home Market numbers on Thursday, I intentionally pushed the column back till Saturday. This will be the new home of the Home Market Numbers from now on and every day of the week there will be at least one column (barring holidays and unexpected circumstances).

Flight of the Phoenix was clearly a disappointment when it was release in theatres last December, but it's fortunes turned around at the home market. Opening week of release saw the remake bring in $7.27 million in DVD rentals and $1.23 million in VHS rentals. Combined they represent nearly half the film's $21.0 million domestic box office.

It was a strong week for new releases with Exorcist: The Beginning coming in second with $4.82 million / $970,000 DVD / VHS rentals. SpongeBob SquarePants also did well earning $3.89 in DVD rentals ranking fifth on this week's chart and $930,000 in VHS rentals ranking third. Rounding out the top five were Taxi with a combined $5.16 million in rentals and Saw with $4.88 million.

Leading the pack on the DVD sales chart was Bambi - Special Edition. Fellow new releases Exorcist: The Beginning, SpongeBob SquarePants and Flight of the Phoenix finished second through fourth respectively while Ray spent its fifth week in the top 5.
