Millions Satisfy Their Sweet Tooth

November 19th, 2005

It was a busy week on the home market with three new releases in the top five including Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, which came in first. The re-adaptation took top spot with a combined total of $8.39 million in rentals; however, there was no breakdown on how much of that was due to people rentign the Deluxe Edition and how much went to Single Disc Edition.

Second place went to Christmas with the Kranks with $6.71 million in combined rentals, which is a lower than expected total given its success at the box office. On the other hand, The Devil's Rejects made $4.98 million, or nearly a third of what the film made during its entire theatrical run. Next up is the first of only two holdovers in the top five, Bewitched, which fell 23% to $4.58 for the week and $17.97 million during its run. Rounding out the top five was Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith with just $4.49 million; its drop-off of 41% was the worst week-to-week drop-off in the top thirty, but the film held up much better on the sales charts.

With no other new releases charting, it was another mixed week. The overall rental was practically flat up a tiny 0.7% from last week, but at $145.1 million it was down 4.2% from last year. Year-to-date 2005 has now brought in $6.6 billion, which is still 5.0% behind last year's pace.

Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith remained in first place on the DVD sales chart this week, and could remain there next week as well. Charlie and the Chocolate Factory finished second and third with the Deluxe Edition beating out the Single Disc Edition. Fourth went to The Devil's Rejects with Christmas with the Kranks coming in fifth place.

The only other new release to chart this week was Beavis & Butt-head - Volume 1 - The Mike Judge Collection as it finished in 15th place.

Tracking the other Star Wars releases, Star Wars: The Phantom Menace fell to 12th place while Attack of the Clones dropped to 14th place. The Original Trilogy Box Set slipped to 18th place, but all three could fall out of the top twenty by next week.

Speaking of new releases boosting older ones on the sales chart, Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory - Special Edition climbed into 19th place.

There was not much new on the TV on DVD charts with Family Guy Presents Stewie Griffin - The Untold Story again leading the way. Second place went to Beavis & Butt-head - Volume 1 - The Mike Judge Collection ahead of Lost - The Complete First Season. Firefly - The Complete Series remained in fourth place during its 101st week of release lifting Serenity's DVD release to 16th place on the Amazon Top 100 chart. Lastly, Blue Collar TV - Season 1 - Volume 1 finished in fifth place.

There were no other new TV on DVD releases in the top ten.

On the rental side there were no changed in the top ten in for the past two weeks. Lost - The Complete First Season continues to dominate the charts with $363,000 this week, well ahead of Alias - The Complete Fourth Season's $173,000. Desperate Housewives The Complete First Season was close behind with $153,000 as was The L Word - The Complete Second Season with $138,000. Rounding out the top five was Six Feet Under - The Complete Fourth Season, which brought in $115,000.

Also no note, Firefly - The Complete Series rose from tenth, to ninth the week before last and hit 8th this week with $71,000. And lastly, Blue Collar TV - Season 1 - Volume 1 opened in 10th place after bringing in $68,000 during its first week of release.
