Goblet of Fire Opens with $39.5 million on Friday

November 19th, 2005

Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire had an opening day almost exactly in line with predictions, grossing $39.5 million according to The Numbers' estimate. That's the best single day for any movie in the franchise, and will be the seventh-biggest day in history if the estimate holds.

Predicting the weekend as a whole based on a single day's takings is always fraught with uncertainty. Our current projection for the weekend stands at $96.7 million, based on a comparison with Prisoner of Azkaban, but the final figure could be $5 million higher or lower.

As one would expect, Thursday night's midnight shows were uniformly sold out, as were evening shows on Friday. Sales for Saturday look strong at the moment, but a dip in box office is to be expected, with fewer midnight shows on Friday night.

We'll have official weekend estimates tomorrow.
