Blu-ray Sales: Game of Thrones is Not Playing Around

March 8, 2015

The top four films on this week's Blu-ray sales chart and nine of the top twenty were new releases. The number one release was Game of Thrones: Season Four, which sold 286,000 units and generated $9.98 million in sales. Its opening week Blu-ray share was 54%, which is incredible compared to the average TV on DVD release. Then again, Game of Thrones isn't the average TV show.

The Interview opened in second place with 184,000 units / $2.40 million, giving it an opening week Blu-ray share of 47%. Dumb and Dumber To was right behind with 183,000 units / $3.85 million. Its opening week Blu-ray share was 43%, which is better than average for a comedy. Birdman opened in fourth place with 134,000 units / $2.66 million. Its opening week Blu-ray share was 61%, which is stunning for a drama, as dramas usually have weaker Blu-ray shares than the total market. The only holdover in the top five was 101 Damlatians with sales of 78,000 units / $1.77 million for the week for totals of 417,000 units / $9.47 million after two.

The Theory of Everything just missed the top five with 50,000 units / $1.11 million. Its opening week Blu-ray share was 47%, which is better than expected for the genre. On the other hand, St. Vincent only managed an opening week Blu-ray share of 29% from 48,000 units / $956,000. This is more in inline with what we would expect from a limited release comedy / drama. The Tale of Princess Kaguya was found further down the list in 16th place with 18,000 units / $409,000. Its opening week Blu-ray share was 63%, which is more inline with Fanboy action films than a cell-animated film that only managed a limited release. The Homesman opened in 18th place with 17,000 units / $257,000. Its opening week Blu-ray share was just 21%, which is bad no matter how you look at it. Dying of the Light rounded out the top twenty with 16,000 units / $238,000. Its opening week Blu-ray share was just 23%, which is terrible, but not unexpected.
