DVD and Blu-ray Releases for April 21st, 2015

April 20, 2015

It is another terrible week on the home market. There is only one big movie coming out this week, Taken 3, but its Tomatometer Score is in single digits. It is infinitely skippable. As for contenders for Pick of the Week, there are not a lot. A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night (DVD or Blu-ray) is the only real contender, while A Most Violent Year is on the list because the screener arrived late and it is the only other release that is an easy recommendation.

Blu-ray Releases - Buy from Amazon: 42nd Street, Blind Woman's Curse, Blue Sky, Breakin' / Breakin' 2: Electric Boogaloo, Cooley High, Dance With Me, Henry, Devil Survivor 2: Complete Collection, Firewalker, Freezing Vibration: Season 2, Ghoulies / Ghoulies II, The Pete Walker Collection: Volume 2, The River, Space Brothers: Collection 2, Three Stooges Collection - Volume One - Triple Feature, Three Stooges Collection - Volume Two - Triple Feature, Unlimited Psychic Squad, and Wicked Lady
Breakin' 2: Electric Boogaloo is so well known as a bad sequel that Electric Boogaloo is shorthand for bad sequels.

3D Blu-ray Releases - Buy from Amazon: Grand Canyon 3D - The American Masterpiece and Mysteries of the Unseen World
Only two 3D releases this week and they are both nature documentaries. That's not an uncommon occurrence.

Cake - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
This film earned some Awards Season buzz; however, while Jennifer Aniston's performance was excellent, the overall movie was not. The extras are limited to a couple of featurettes, so call it a rental, that's it.

Escape from New York - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray Combo Pack
I love this movie, but I don't know if I can justify buying it yet again. The number of extras on the Blu-ray does seem to indicate it is worth the double-dip.

Everly - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
A lot of critics complained that this movie was pure style and lacked substance and that the violence entered into exploitation territory. However, there is certainly a fanbase for films like this. ... I'm tempted blind buy it myself.

Fortitude: Season One - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
The cover just says Fortitude, but this series has been renewed for a second season. That's great news for fans, and given its reviews, there are lots of fans of this show. On the other hand, there are not a lot of extras on the four-disc set, just a 30-minute making of featurette.

A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
One of the best horror films of the past several years. The extras are on par with most limited releases / foreign-language imports. It is certainly a contender for Pick of the Week, especially if you are interested in horror films that are certainly not a Hollywood product.

Little Accidents - Buy from Amazon: DVD
Melodramatic rather than engaging. If you like the cast, it is worth a rental, but that's it.

The Marine 4: Moving Target - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray Combo Pack
A screener for this movie arrived unexpectedly today. Since the franchise has lasted four installments, there is clearly an audience for these movies. I'm not in that audience, so I'll be giving away this film as part of our weekly Box Office Prediction contest starting this week.

Note: This DVD made its home market debut on the 13th.

A Most Violent Year - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
This film earned 90% positive reviews and some Awards Season Buzz. Can it live up to the hype? If not, is it still worth checking out / picking up? Read our review for my opinion.

The Musketeers: Season 2 - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
The first season earned mixed reviews. The second season earned better reviews, but I think that's because most critics gave up on the show after the first few episodes. Extras include behind-the-scenes featurette and some interviews. That's better than a lot of U.K. imports, for what it's worth.

Naruto Shippuden Uncut Set 22 - Buy from Amazon: DVD
This series sells really well, for an Anime title. So much so, that I'm a little surprised that it doesn't come out on Blu-ray.

One Piece: Collection 12 - Buy from Amazon: DVD
The second Anime title on this week's list. This one should also be on Blu-ray. I think there's enough demand for it.

Signed, Sealed, Delivered: The Complete Series - Buy from Amazon: DVD
A TV series about the Dead Letter Department of the post office and the people there trying to make sure packages get to where they need to go. It only lasted one season and there are very few reviews online. It is a Hallmark original series, so keep that in mind.

Taken 3 - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray Combo Pack
The first film in the franchise was an energetic action film and while it wasn't high art, it wasn't aiming to be. It knew what it was and did it well. This film... 9% positive reviews. Skip it. Just pretend Taken never had any sequels.

Teen Titans Go!: Season One - Buy from Amazon: Blu-ray
So the first part of season two, Appetite For Disruption, came out on DVD last week. This week the first season is coming out on Blu-ray. Why stagger the releases like this? Because Warner Bros. clearly hates its fans.

TV on DVD Full Series Megasets - Buy from Amazon: Tour of Duty
A TV show about the Vietnam War from the late 1980s.

Walter - Buy from Amazon: DVD
Good cast, mixed reviews. Call it a rental.
