DVD Sales: Five Armies Completes Three Weeks on Top

May 15, 2015

None of the new releases were able to top the DVD sales chart leaving The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies in first place with 73,000 units / $1.10 million over the week for a total of 1.13 million units / $16.92 million.

The Woman in Black 2: Angel of Death opened in second place with 56,000 units / $831,000. It's a January release. That's about all that needs to be said. Interstellar slipped into third place with 55,000 units / $998,000 for totals of 453,000 units / $7.37 million. Big Eyes debuted in fourth place with 50,000 units / $747,000. It only opened semi-wide, so this is an okay opening. Big Hero 6 returned to the top five with 46,000 units / $682,000 for the week giving it totals of 1.94 million units / $30.85 million. This film is showing remarkable legs on DVD.

Batman vs. Robin opened in first place on the Blu-ray sales chart, but it only managed seventh place on DVD with 43,000 units / $595,000. The Babadook opened in tenth place on DVD with 37,000 units / $375,000. The final new release to chart this week was The Man with the Iron Fists 2. This film placed 14th during its opening week on DVD with 28,000 units / $505,000.

There's one last film to talk about: Frozen. As we mentioned recently, the film has spent a year in the top 30, which is by far the record. However, this week it finally fell out of the chart. It is currently in second place on the all-time chart for weeks in the top 30, but Pitch Perfect 2 helped Pitch Perfect return to the top 30, so it might not last there long. Additionally, Minions comes out in July, so the two Despicable Me films should return to the chart during the summer. That said, this is hardly the last we'll see of Frozen on the DVD sales chart and by the time Frozen 2 comes out, it should be in top spot.
