Per Theater Chart: Youthful Enthusiasm

June 9th, 2015

Testament of Youth

There was only one film in the $10,000 club, Testament of Youth, which opened with $13,252 in four theaters. There was one other film, A Pigeon Sat on a Branch Reflecting on Existence, which earned an average of $8,699 in two theaters over the weekend. However, it was a Wednesday release and its average over five days was $12,657.

The rest of the new limited releases could be divided into two groups. Firstly, there were two releases that opened in more than 200 theaters. Dil Dhadakne Do opened with more than $1 million in 238 theaters for an average of $5,573. Love and Mercy opened with more than $2 million in 480 theaters for an average of $4,421. Both have earned some measure of mainstream success. On the other hand, two new limited releases will not. Hungry Hearts opened with $286 in one theater; however, it is also playing on Video on Demand, so that's a mitigating factor. The final film had no excuse. United Passions only managed an average of $82 in ten theaters. Given the price of tickets and the number screenings per day, this means was only about one person per screening. Ouch.

On a side note, John Oliver's reaction on Last Week Tonight was amazing. If you aren't watching that show and have HBO, check it out. If you don't have HBO, you can watch most of the show on YouTube.

This past week also saw milestones reached for a few Per Theater Chart alumni:

  • Iris topped $1 million over the weekend, which is excellent for a documentary.
  • Dil Dhadakne Do opened with more than $1 million, so obviously it reached its first milestone over the weekend. It should get to $2 million, but Bollywood films tend to have really short legs, so I'm not bullish about its chances to get to $3 million or beyond.
  • Love and Mercy opened with more than $2 million, so obviously it reached its first two milestone over the weekend. However, unlike the previous film, its chances at earning more than a couple more milestones is very strong.
