Per Theater Chart: Mistress's Opening is American Dream Come True

We are inching towards Awards Season and the number one film on this week's per theater chart is a potential Awards Season player. That film, Mistress America, earned an average of $23,302 in four theaters. That's more than enough to suggest it will expand, but not enough to suggest it will expand truly wide, or even semi-wide. Second place went to the overall number one film, Straight Outta Compton, with an average of $21,835. Meru was well back with an average of $13,040 in seven theaters. Assassination saw its average rise to $10,111 in 29 theaters. It is very rare for films to have their averages rise week-to-week.
None of the rest of the new limited releases were even close to the $10,000 mark. Rosenwald came the closest with an average of $6,000 in its lone theater. Go Away Mr. Tumor barely managed half that with an average of $3,336 in 15 theaters. The Great Man earned $2,482 in one theater. Tango Negro: The African Roots of Tango and Brothers: Blood Against Blood earned nearly identical averages of $2,297 and $2,179 respectively. People, Places, Things missed the Mendoza Line with an average of $1,619 in 19 theaters. However, it was playing on VOD, so that's a mitigating circumstance. Paulette didn't have that excuse and it only made $882 in one theater.
Like last week, there was only one major milestone this week. And like last week, it was Irrational Man. It got to $3 million over the weekend, but its theater count was also cut in half, so further milestones will get a lot harder to reach.
