Per Theater Chart: Carol Sings a Joyful Tune

November 24, 2015

Carol

Carol had a festive opening earning just over $250,000 in four theaters for an average of $63,378. That's the third best average for an opening this year, just ahead of Ex Machina and just behind Sicario. The overall box office leader, The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 2, was next with an average of $24,591. Legend was next with an average of $21,709 in four theaters. That's a good start, but its reviews suggest not so good legs. Speaking of long legs, Brooklyn remained in the $10,000 for the third week in a row earning an average of $10,270 in just over 100 theaters.

Only one other new limited releases did well and that was Mustang, which earn an average of $7,384 in three theaters. A Journey Through Time With Anthony struggled with an average of $3,421 in 17 theaters. Censored Voices and Mediterranea had near-identical openings with average of $3,077 and $2,923 respectively. Summer of Sangailes only managed an opening of $453 in its lone theater.

This past week also saw milestones reached for a few Per Theater Chart alumni:

  • Brooklyn reached $1 million just before the weekend and $2 million over the weekend.
  • Prem Ratan Dhan Payo topped $3 million before the weekend and then saw its weekend haul slashed by 74%. It will still get to $4 million, but that's it.
  • Suffragette got to $3 million before the weekend and should get to $4 million next weekend. $5 million remains a possibility, but not a sure thing.
  • Spotlight made it to $2 million before the weekend and then hit $3 million, $4 million, and $5 million over the weekend. At this pace, $10 million seems almost guaranteed and if it does well during Awards Season, it will go even further.
