Weekend Wrap-Up: Star Wars misses its third Century Mark, Still Sets Multiple Records with $90.24 Million

As expected, Star Wars: The Force Awakens dominated the weekend box office earning $90.24 million, breaking several records along the way. However, it did fall 40% over the weekend, which is a lot for this time of year. It appears The Force Awakens is acting more like a typical blockbuster hit and less like the typically leggy December release. That said, I don't think Disney is disappointed with the results so far. On the other hand, The Hateful Eight got off to a disappointing start earning third place with just a fraction of Django Unchained's opening weekend. The overall box office was down from last week, but was still an incredible $219 million. This was 26% lower than last week, but 41% higher than the same weekend last year. Year-to-date is a little less useful, as 2016 is only 3 days old, but it is 27% higher than 2015 was after the first weekend. This is even more impressive, as 2015 had an extra day before the weekend.
Star Wars: The Force Awakens added $90.24 million to its running tally, which now sits at $742.21 million. Over the weekend, the film broke the record for Biggest Domestic Hit of 2015, Fastest to $700 million, Biggest third weekend, and Biggest January weekend, in that order. Some of these records were really close. It topped American Sniper for the Biggest January record by less that $1 million. On the other hand, some of the records were completely destroyed. The film took just 16 days to reach $700 million, while it took the previous record-holder Avatar, 72 days. As for further records, the film has already reached $750 million today, in just its 18th day of release, earning the Fastest to $750 million record, so it will quickly top Avatar for All-Time Domestic Box Office. After that, it will become the first film to reach $800 million domestically and likely $900 million domestically. $1 billion domestically seems out of reach, unless the film gets a re-release later on.
Daddy's Home held on a lot better than anticipated with $29.21 million over the weekend for a two-week total of $93.89 million. It will likely hit $100 million before the weekend and should become just the third $150 million hit for Paramount released in 2015.
The Hateful Eight opened in third place with $15.71 million over the weekend for a five-day wide expansion of $22.39 million. Including of its limited release, the film has pulled in $29.05 million. By comparison, Django Unchained earned $30.12 million during its three-day opening and it managed $63.44 million over its first six days. Very few people thought The Hateful Eight would match Django Unchained, but most thought it would be closer than this.
Sisters was next with $12.76 million for a three-week total of $61.88 million. This is twice what the film reportedly cost to make, so the film is well on its way to profitability. It just needs to cover its advertising budget during the rest of its domestic run, plus its international run. If it can do that, it will break even before it reaches the home market.
So far, Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Road Chip has had a similar run as Sisters has had, but it cost a lot more to make. This past weekend, it earned fifth place with $12.07 million over the weekend for a total of $67.65 million. The film cost $90 million to make, so it will need to double its current worldwide haul if it wants to break even any time soon.
Looking in on the sophomore class, Joy fell 40% to just $10.21 million over the weekend for a total of $38.52 million after ten days of release. That's not terrible, but well below the other Jennifer Lawrence / David O'Russell collaborations. The Big Short held on a lot better earning $9.06 million over the weekend for a total of $33.06 million, including its limited release run. It is on pace to become the biggest limited release hit of 2015 within a few weeks and it could last in theaters till the Oscars are handed out. Concussion was right behind with $7.85 million over the weekend for a total of $25.27 million after two. It's busted Oscar-bait and it is struggling at the box office. Point Break bombed with $6.82 million over the weekend for a total of $22.40 million. It is doing better internationally, but not by enough to think it will break even any time soon.
One last note, Creed joined The Good Dinosaur and 25 other films in the 2015 Century Club, as it crossed the $100 million mark early during the weekend. It won't be the last film released in 2015 to get there, as Daddy's Home is guaranteed to do the same.
