2015 - Awards Season: WGA - Nominations

January 6, 2016

Spotlight

The Writers Guild of America nominees were announced and there are only a few surprises here. Additionally, one of these three races seems too close to call at this point.

The categories and nominees are...

Best Original Screenplay

Best Adapted Screenplay

Best Documentary Screenplay

Notes and Reactions...

  • Sicario picked up a nomination, which is great news. It had been unfairly overlooked during Awards Season before this. I'm also glad Trainwreck and Straight Outta Compton were nominated, as they are not your typical Awards Season films, but they did earn the reviews to be considered.
  • That said, Spotlight is by far the leader in the Best Original Screenplay category.
  • On the other hand, Best Adapted Screenplay seems like a four-way tie. I think The Big Short has the best shot, but there are just as many who think Carol, The Martian, or Steve Jobs will win. (Only Trumbo looks like a long shot at this point.)
  • I'm constitutionally bound to support Being Canadian for Best Documentary Screenplay, although Going Clear seems like the likely winner.
