2015 Awards Season: SAG Winners—Oscar Picture Clarifies, Mostly

The Screen Actors Guild winners were handed out last night and for the most part the winners here will likely walk away with an Oscar. There is one major exception.

The categories and winners are...

Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture

• Spotlight

• Brie Larson for Room

• Leonardo DiCaprio for The Revenant

• Idris Elba for Beasts of No Nation

• Alicia Vikander for The Danish Girl

• Mad Max: Fury Road

• Spotlight was the favorite to win for Best Performance by a Cast, so this is not a surprise. However, after The Big Short’s win at the PGA, this category had become a closer race. On a side note, it seems The Revenant’s Oscar chances are beginning to fade.
• Brie Larson is nearly a lock to win an Oscar for Room. The only question is her age. Oscars have been known to pass over a younger performer to give the award to an older actor who hasn’t won previously.
• Leonardo DiCaprio is an even bigger favorite to in an Oscar for The Revenant. If he doesn’t win this year, one has to assume there is something behind-the-scenes preventing his win.
• Idris Elba won Best Supporting Actor for his performance in Beasts of No Nation. He wasn’t even nominated for an Oscar. His snub was one of the main reasons for the #OscarsSoWhite campaign.
• Alicia Vikander beat out Kate Winslet for Best Supporting Actress. Winslet won the Golden Globe, but the SAGs is the better indicator.
• Mad Max: Fury Road was expected to win for Best Stunts, so this award is no surprise. This could mean the film will earn a couple of technical Oscars. However, this category isn’t a good indicator for any single Oscar.
