2015 - Awards Season: WGA - Winners - Spotlight Shines on Potential Oscar Winners

February 15th, 2016

The Writers Guild of America awards were handed out over the weekend. Frankly, there wasn't a single surprise in any of the three theatrical categories, so there's not much to talk about.

The categories and winners are...

Best Original Screenplay

Best Adapted Screenplay

Best Documentary Screenplay

Notes and Reactions...

  • Spotlight was widely seen as the favorite to win Best Original Screenplay and it did. It is practically a lock to win the Oscar.
  • Likewise, I expected The Big Short to win and it did. Most people have it the favorite to win the Oscar for Best Adapted Screenplay as well.
  • Going Clear took home the prize for Best Documentary, but it wasn't even nominated for an Oscar. That is odd. Its win doesn't reduce Amy's chances to win the Oscar.
