International Box Office: Apocalypse Tops Weekend Chart, Zootopia Hits $1 billion

X-Men: Apocalypse returned to top spot on the international chart with $84.4 million in 66 markets for totals of $286.0 million internationally and $403.0 million worldwide. Most of the film's weekend haul came from China, where it earned first place with $59.33 million. This is the best opening in the franchise in that market. The film has yet to open in Japan, but will likely fall out of the top ten before it gets there.
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows opened in second place with $34.0 million in 40 markets during its opening weekend abroad. Its biggest market was the U.K. where it pulled in $5.08 million in 513 theaters; however, it only managed second place there. It earned first place in both Russia ($4.73 million on 2,150 screens) and in Mexico ($3.71 million). It is too early to tell where the film will end up, but this is a relatively good start.
Alice Through the Looking Glass fell from first to third place with $30.9 million in 45 markets over the weekend for totals of $125.5 million internationally and $176.9 million worldwide. The film has made more worldwide than it cost to make, but it will need to nearly double that to break even any time soon. The film's biggest market of the weekend was China, where it added $6.59 million to its running tally, which reached $49.31 million after 11 days of release.
Warcraft remained in fourth place with $29.9 million in 28 markets. The film opened in first place in the U.K. with $5.26 million in 497 theaters, but that does include four days of previews. If it does as well here, given the size of the two markets, then it would earn between $25 million and $30 million. That's not good for a film that cost $160 million to make. On the other hand, we have early reports that the film broke Furious 7's opening day record in China earning $7.59 million, and that's just the previews, but we will deal with that next week.
The Angry Birds Movie fell to fifth place with $16.7 million in 88 markets over the weekend, for totals of $196.8 million internationally and $283.9 million worldwide. The film had no major market openings over the weekend, although it did earn first place in Portugal with $344,000 on 92 screens over the weekend for a five-day opening of $447,000.
Zootopia became the second film released in 2016 to reach $1 billion worldwide... maybe. According to Disney, the film's total as of the end of business of Sunday was $1.00002 billion. That's $20,000 over the 10-digit milestone and that's such a small margin that even a slight adjustment in the film's weekend total of $4.4 million worldwide could put the film under $1 billion. That said, if it didn't quite get to $1 billion over the weekend, it got there on Monday.
