January 18, 2017

Worlds Apart

Despite earning 50% positive reviews, Worlds Apart topped the theater average chart with $16,353 in its one theater. The only other film in the $10,000 club was 20th Century Women, which spent its third week there with an average of $10,894 in 29 theaters.

There were only a handful of other new limited releases. Vince Giordano: There’s a Future in the Past did the best with $6,285 in one theater. Some Like It Hot was next with an average of $4,223 in ten theaters. Ok Jaanu struggled with an average of $1,868 in 121 theaters. Reset rounded out the list of new releases with an average of $1,099 in two.

This past week also saw milestones reached for a couple of Per Theater Chart alumni:

  • Silence reached $1 million before the weekend and $2 million and $3 million over the weekend. If the film’s production budget was similar to most limited releases, then this would be an impressive run. However, that’s not the case as it cost $40 million to make.
  • A Monster Calls made it to $3 million over the weekend and could hit $4 million before it is done. That will be the last milestone it reaches.
  • As expected, Jackie topped $10 million this past weekend.
  • Lion made it to $10 million before the weekend and it is nearly at $15 million.
  • Manchester by the Sea surpassed $35 million early in the weekend and will get to $40 million soon.
  • As expected, Fences started to lose theaters at an accelerated rate, but that didn’t stop it from getting to $45 million over the weekend.
  • Hidden Figures hit a large number of milestones since last weekend and it is already past $55 million. It will hit a sizable number of milestones by the end of this coming weekend.
  • Likewise, La La Land raced from $50 million to $70 million over the past week.
