Theater Averages: Dunkirk Lands On Top with $13,579

July 26, 2017

Dunkirk

The number one film on the overall weekend box office chart, Dunkirk, was also the number one film on the theater average chart earning an average of $13,579. The best limited release was Landline with an average of $13,139 in four theaters. Its reviews suggest it won’t maintain that average as it tries to expand. The final film in the $10,000 club was Girls Trip, which earned an average of $12,042. The film could have earned half that and it still would have been an okay opening for its production budget.

Only one other new limited release did well, as The Midwife earned an average of $7,114 in three theaters. The Fencer was way back with an average of $2,786 in two theaters, while The Untamed was right behind with $2,718 in its lone theater. The Pulitzer at 100 and The Girl Without Hands were practically tied with $2,577 and $2,523 respectively. Both were playing in one theater.

Further down the list, we find three films that missed the Mendoza Line (less than $2,000/theater). The Fuzz only managed an average of $1,118 in two theaters. The widest limited release of the week was Munna Michael, but that only managed an average $866 in 75 theaters. That’s still better than Santoalla, which earned $489 in one theater over the weekend. However, that film was a Wednesday debut and earned $1,206 over five days.

This past week also saw milestones reached for a few Per Theater Chart alumni:

  • Maudie got to $4 million faster than anticipated and it might have the legs to get to $5 million.
  • As expected, The Beguiled reached $10 million late in the weekend. However, that’s as far as it will go.
  • The Big Sick's second weekend wide was enough to push it past $24 million. On Monday, it overtook Gifted as the biggest limited release hit of the year.
