HYOUKA: Part Two

Transformers: The Last Knight is the biggest release of the week and it has scared away a lot of the competition, but it’s garbage and should be avoided. There are no big releases that are pick of the week contenders, but some smaller ones fit the bill, including David Lynch: The Art Life: The Criterion Collection, HYOUKA: Part Two, and Shameless: The Complete Seventh Season. All are amazing and worth checking out, but none have many extras, so it is up to the role of the dice to determine the Pick of the Week. ... And it’s HYOUKA.

47 Meters Down - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray Combo Pack
Video on Demand
The second horror movie in a year that deals with sharks. The reviews are mixed, so unless you are into this genre, it’s not worth picking up. The only extras are an audio commentary track and an 11-minute look at the film. On a side note, the tagline on the box is, “How do you survive the world's greatest predators?” You are more likely to die eating shark than getting eaten by a shark.

David Lynch: The Art Life: The Criterion Collection - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD Blu-ray
Video on Demand
A look at David Lynch. If you are a cinephile, you probably at least appreciate his work. The film’s reviews are nearly 90% positive, but the only extra is a 16-minute interview with one of the co-directors of the movie, Jon Nguyen. Even so, it is a slow week, so it is a contender for Pick of the Week.

The Devil’s Candy - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: Blu-ray
Video on Demand
There’s no DVD release up on Amazon, but if you are stuck with standard definition, you can buy it from the distributor’s site here. The lack of extras hurts, but it is at least worth a rental on VOD.

HYOUKA: Part Two - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: Blu-ray Combo Pack
I gave the first part Pick of the Week back in July. This one is also a contender for Pick of the Week. There are no real extras on the DVD / Blu-ray, but the quality of the show is enough.

Janet King: Series 3: Playing Advantage - No Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD
Video on Demand
An Australian murder mystery series. There are no reviews on Rotten Tomatoes, but the series has won a couple of awards in its native Australia. There are ten behind-the-scenes featurettes, but most of them are only a minute or two, so it is quantity over quality.

Line of Duty: Series 4 - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD
Video on Demand
A British police procedural that isn’t canceled. I really thought it was over, but apparently season five will debut in 2019 and there’s already a confirmed season six. The show has won numerous awards over the years and fans should be excited for more, even if it takes more than a year for new episodes to arrive.

The Little Hours - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
Video on Demand
This is the first film released by the new distributor, Gunpowder and Sky. It earned $1.6 million in limited release, which is a solid result, especially for a debut. Unfortunately, it is only coming out on DVD-R / Blu-ray-R. I have purchased releases like this in the past and they’ve always worked, but they almost never have extras. That said, it is still worth picking up.

Longmire: The Complete Fifth Season - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
This show was canceled by A&E, but then rescued by Netflix. Now it has been canceled by Netflix. The final season should air later this year, but fans will want to grab this season’s DVD / Blu-ray reight away.

L.O.R.D: Legend of Ravaging Dynasties - Buy from Amazon: DVD
This is the first computer animated film produced in China. This gives it historical significance, but is it also worth checking out on its own merits? Read our review for my opinion.

Shameless: The Complete Seventh Season - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
Great show and one that made news because the co-star, Emmy Rossum, demanded pay equity, not only going forward, but retroactively. And she got it. Good for her. Extras on the DVD / Blu-ray include a couple of featurettes and deleted scenes. That’s not a lot, but it is still a contender for Pick of the Week.

SpaceCamp - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
This film bombed back in 1986 earning less than $10 million on a $20 million budget. However, a lot of this had to do with the real world Challenger disaster, which happened mere months before the film was released. It has since found an audience on the home market. In fact, this Blu-ray is selling really well compared to other new releases. The only extras are a couple of interview featurettes, but fans of the movie will still want to pick it up.

Sleepy Hollow: Season Four - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD
Video on Demand
The show did well with critics, but struggled with audiences and was canceled after four seasons. You can also buy the Complete Series.

Transformers: The Last Knight - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD, Blu-ray Combo Pack, 3D Combo Pack, or 4K Ultra HD Combo Pack
Video on Demand
The worst film in the one of the most consistently worst franchises. Not only did it bomb with critics, it also had the worst box office performance in the franchise. It should still break even sometime during its home market run, but plans for further films are a lot more shaky now. I got a chance to review this title, but I passed, as I was told by people who know me that it would just make me angry. Frankly, I would much rather watch Lindsay EllisThe Whole Plate instead. In fact, I recommend that series, as well as MovieBob’s Really That Good on the animated Transformers movie from the 1980s, as well as his follow-up on Orson Welles. Also coming out this week is the 5-Movie Collection, but four of those five are not even worth renting.

Mickey Mouse: Merry & Scary - No Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD
There’s only one Christmas title this week, but it is partially a Halloween title, so it doesn’t really count.

Waiting for Guffman - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: Blu-ray
There are a lot of horror films on this week’s list. That’s not surprising, as Halloween is barely more than a month away.

3D Blu-ray Releases - Buy from Amazon:
Transformers: The Last Knight - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: 3D Combo Pack
This movie isn’t worth spending money on to rent. It certainly isn’t worth spending extra money to get in 3D.

4K Blu-ray Releases - Buy from Amazon:
It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: 4K Ultra HD Combo Pack
Transformers: The Last Knight - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: 4K Ultra HD Combo Pack
Transformers: The Last Knight is garbage, while I’m not sure It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown would actually look good in 4K.

They are remaking The Greatest American Hero with a female lead. I’m intrigued. I loved the original show and I think a remake could work.

Spider-Man: Homecoming is one of the biggest and one of the best big films of the summer. I’m hoping to get a Blu-ray screener to review.
