Weekend Wrap-Up: Coco Continues its Conquest with $18.45 million

December 12, 2017

Coco

It was a good weekend at the box office, relatively speaking, as most films in the top five beat expectations. Granted, this was mostly by tiny amounts, but it added up. We still fell 20% compared to last week to $84 million. This is 1.2% higher than the same weekend last year and we were expecting a similarly close loss, so this is a surprise victory. The year-over-year numbers are almost identical to last week, with this year down by 4.1% or $420 million when compared to last year. Right now 2017 has pulled in $9.79 billion, while 2016 had a running tally of $10.21 billion.

Coco earned $18.45 million over the weekend for a three-week total of $135.66 million. Its weekend total is under $100,000 behind what Moana had earned at this point in its run, so this suggests it will earn about $100 million during the rest of its run. However, Moana didn’t have to deal with direct competition quite this soon. Even so, I think a $200 million domestic total is a safe bet for Coco.

Justice League was next with $9.66 million over the weekend for a total of $212.13 million after four weeks of release. It really needed to be close to $300 million at this point and its international numbers are not picking up the slack.

Wonder added $8.45 million over the weekend and has made $100.30 after four weeks of release. This is double what almost everyone thought it would make domestically and it will still be in wide release over the Christmas weekend.

The Disaster Artist earned fourth place with $6.37 million in just 840 theaters over the weekend for a total of $7.96 million, including its week of limited release. Its theater average is $7,579, which suggests it still has room to grow, while it picked up a couple of Golden Globes Nominations, so its buzz will only grow. It is too soon to tell what the film will finish with, but $50 million wouldn’t shock me.

Thor: Ragnarok rounded out the top five with $6.27 million over the weekend for a total of $301.14 million after six weeks of release. Its theater average is still above $2,000, barely, so The Last Jedi won’t completely knock it out of wide release, but it might not be in the top ten by the time Christmas gets here.

Just Getting Started bombed with just $3.20 million over the weekend in 2,161 theaters for an average of less than $1,500. Theater owners are not going to want to keep this film in theaters for long. Furthermore, its reviews are terrible and it earned just a C from CinemaScore, so its word of mouth will also be a detriment.
