Limited and VOD Releases: Will 2017 Fade Away?

December 29, 2017

In The Fade

This weekend is very literally the last chance for a film to qualify for the Oscars and for most Awards Season ceremonies, it is too late as voting has already begun. This explains why there are only three films on this week’s list, only two of which have any reviews. Film Stars Don’t Die in Liverpool is easily the best, but I’m still unsure if it will thrive in limited release.

Ex Files 3: Return of the Exes - No Reviews
This is the third film in the Ex Files franchise. These films have done well in their native China, but romantic comedies rarely translate into other languages / cultures.

Film Stars Don’t Die in Liverpool - Reviews
The film stars Annette Bening and Jamie Bell and focuses on the real-life relations between their characters. It is the best-reviewed film in this week’s list, but its reviews are only good enough for limited release and not award-worthy.

In The Fade - Reviews
Diane Kruger stars as a woman whose husband and child are killed in a terrorist attack perpetrated by a pair of Neo Nazis. The film’s reviews would be good enough for wide release, but will likely be fatal for limited release. Wait till you can rent it on VOD.

Secondary VOD Releases:
There are hardly any limited releases at all, so I’m not surprised there are no Seconday VOD releases.
