International Box Office: Monster Hunts Down Black Panther With $190 million Opening Weekend

February 22, 2018

Monster Hunt 2

Monster Hunt 2 earned first place on the international chart with $190 million. Of that, $188.47 million was earned in its native China. The only other market where the film earned more than $1 million was Malaysia, where it earned $1.2 million. The original Monster Hunt didn’t start nearly as fast, but it also had surprisingly long legs for a Chinese film. I suspect Sequelitis will reduce this film’s legs, but that won’t stop it from improving on the first film’s nearly $400 million worldwide run.

Black Panther had to settle for second place on the international chart with $169.0 million in 48 markets for a worldwide total of $371.0 million after just three days of release. This is already more than the totals earned by The Incredible Hulk and Captain America: The First Avenger. To emphasize, it took just three days for the film to beat the lifetime worldwide totals of two previous MCU films. As for individual markets, both South Korea and the U.K. could claim top spot. The film earned $15.61 million on 1,620 screens over the weekend in South Korea, for a total opening of $24.95 million. It earned $24.88 million in 585 theaters in the U.K., with previews. It wasn’t able to crack $10 million in any other market, but it came close in Brazil ($9.4 million); Mexico ($9.16 million); and Australia ($8.34 million). On the downside, it isn’t doing as well internationally as it did domestically, given the relative size of the markets, but this is a very, very minor complaint. It needed just over $200 million, but with this result, it is still on pace for $1 billion worldwide.

Detective Chinatown 2 was next with $155 million in 6 markets. Almost all of that was earned in China, where it debuted in second place with $155.01 million.

Operation Red Sea managed third place in China and fourth place overall with $72.88 million in its native market.

The Monkey King 3: Kingdom of Women rounded out the top five. It earned fourth place in China with $50.92 million over the weekend for a total opening of $80.11 million. The film opened in a few other international markets, but earned significantly less than $1 million in total in the rest.

Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle barely hung onto a spot in the top 20, but it hit another milestone, so it is worth talking about. The film added $5.56 million on 2,979 screens in 83 markets and now has totals of $528.66 million internationally and $906.27 million worldwide. It became just the 46th film to reach that milestone. Meanwhile, the film has yet to open in Japan and it will need to make over $50 million there to reach $1 billion worldwide. That’s going to be tough, but it is not impossible.
