February 28, 2018

Operation Red Sea

Operation Red Sea climbed into first place with $107 million in five markets for an international total of $336 million. Of this, the film earned $107.02 million in its native China for a two-week total of $335.81 million there. Amazingly, this was 46% higher than its opening weekend.

Black Panther had settle for second place, again, this time with $83.8 million in 55 markets for totals of $304.0 million internationally and $707.6 million worldwide. The studio’s share of this is nearly $350 million, which is more than enough to pay for its production budget and its initial advertising budget. The studio likely upped its advertising budget after its record-breaking debut. The film’s biggest new opening was in Vietnam, where it earned $1.6 million over the weekend and $2.5 million including previews. The film also opened in Russia, but only on IMAX and Deluxe formats; it still earned $1.6 million, $2.6 million including previews. As of end of business on Sunday, Black Panther had reached tenth place in the MCU and was just behind The Winter Soldier for ninth place. By this time next week, it will likely be in the top five.

Detective Chinatown 2 was right behind with $81 million over the weekend for a two-week total of $420 million. Almost all of this has been earned in China, where it has pulled in $419.58 million, including $80.27 million this past weekend.

Monster Hunt 2 fell from first to fourth place on the international chart with $33.5 million in seven markets over the weekend for an international total of $323 million. In China, the film managed $32.61 million over the weekend, for a total of $320.61 million in its native market.

Fifty Shades Freed rounded out the top five with $22.5 million in 61 markets for an international total of $231.2 million and a worldwide total of $321.0 million. The studio’s share is about $140 million, which is more than it cost to make and advertise, so the film is already profitable before the home market.

Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle almost fell out of the top 20, but we will continue to keep an eye on it, as it tries to get to $1 billion. This weekend, it pulled in $3.20 million on 2,217 screens in 83 markets for totals of $533.667 million internationally and $920.95 million worldwide.
