May 23, 2018

Deadpool 2

The re-release of 2001: A Space Odyssey topped the theater average chart by a huge margin earning just over $200,000 in four theaters for an average of $50,690. The overall box office leader, Deadpool 2, was next with an average of $28,859 in over 4,000 theaters. First Reformed was right behind with an average of $24,391 in just 4 theaters.

The were several other new limited releases, but only a couple of them did well. This includes On Chesil Beach, with an average of $8,941 in four theaters. That Summer also did well with $5,977 in one theater. On the other hand, The Most Unknown struggled with $2,905, also in one theater. Then there was the trio of films that missed the Mendoza Line. Pope Francis—A Man of His Word was playing in over 300 theaters, earning an average of $1,468. Gray Matter debuted on VOD on Tuesday, which explains why it only earned an average of $1,172 in 12 theaters over the weekend. How to Talk to Girls at Parties flopped with $827 in its lone theater.

This past week also saw milestones reached for a few Per Theater Chart alumni:

  • The Rider got to $1 million late in the weekend. It has a small shot at $2 million before it is done.
  • 102 Not Out hit $1 million before the weekend, but it too will have trouble getting to $2 million.
  • A Fantastic Woman reached $2 million just ahead of its home market debut.
  • RBG hit $3 million over the weekend and it will have no trouble getting to $4 million, $5 million, $6 million, and it might get further.
  • Isle of Dogs made it all the way to $30 million. That’s as far as it will go, but it is still the biggest limited release hit of the year and the 32nd biggest domestic hit of 2018, at least for now.
