International Box Office: Fallen Remains Tops, but Ant-sized Competition Looms

July 4, 2018

Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom

Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom remained on top of the international chart for the fourth and final time. This past weekend, it earned $57.3 million in 68 markets for totals of $669.2 million internationally and $934.9 million worldwide. The film had no major market openings this past weekend and has no major market opening next week as well, before closing out its international run in Japan on the 13th. The film’s biggest market of the weekend was China, where it earned $14.81 million on approximately 10,000 screens over the weekend for a three-week total of $230.67 million.

Incredibles 2 was close behind with $44.3 million in 36 markets for totals of $207.1 million internationally and $647.7 million worldwide. The film had the best opening ever for a Pixar film in both Brazil ($6.5 million) and Taiwan ($3.2 million). Meanwhile, it had to settle for second place in that metric in New Zealand behind Finding Dory, with an impressive $1.21 million on 122 screens over the weekend for a total opening of $1.43 million. Impressively, the film became the biggest animated hit in India after just two weeks of release with $5.9 million. India is a massive market, but it doesn’t have an audience for animated films. Hits like this could slowly change that. The film opens in France this coming weekend and since it is in barely half the international markets, it has a long road ahead before it is done.

Animal World rose to first place in China and third place internationally with $34.94 million over the weekend for a nine-day total of $38.01 million.

Sanju was next with an international debut of $22.16 million and a worldwide total of $24.89 million. It isn’t that common for an Indian film to make the top five, so this is a reason to celebrate for the studio.

Ocean’s 8 rounded out the top five with $14.4 million on 8,606 screens in 62 markets for totals of $95.7 million internationally and $210.7 million worldwide. The film had no major market openings this past weekend, but it did debut in first place in both Sweden ($589,000 on 117 screens) and in Finland ($308,000 on 77). Up next for the film is Spain this weekend, while it will debut in Italy at the end of the month and Japan in August.

Disney is no longer reporting weekend international numbers for Avengers: Infinity War, so unless it gets a big boost from Ant-man and the Wasp this weekend, it won’t be climbing the all-time charts any further. That said, it is in third place internationally and fourth worldwide, so it has plenty of reason to celebrate.
