International Box Office: Over $100 million for Mr. Billion

August 1, 2018

Hello Mr. Billionaire

Hello Mr. Billionaire, a Chinese remake of Brewster’s Millions, opened in first place in China and the international market with $132.26 million. That’s more than 800 million in the local currency, while it took just one more day to live up to its name and reach 1 billion Yen in revenue.

Mission: Impossible—Fallout opened in second place with $94.6 million in just 36 markets during its opening weekend. This includes a massive opening in South Korea, where the film earned $18.57 million on 1,957 screens over the weekend for a total opening of $24.91 million. Its second biggest market was the U.K., where it earned $9.58 million in 584 theaters, but this is weaker than its debut here, given the relative size of the two markets.

Detective Dee: The Four Heavenly Kings was next with $43.49 million in its native market. That was enough for second place in that market and third place internationally.

Hotel Transylvania 3: Summer Vacation slipped a spot to fourth place with $31.58 million in 73 markets for totals of $165.92 million internationally and $285.10 million worldwide. Its biggest new market was the U.K., where it earned fourth place with $4.51 million in 877 theaters. That doesn’t sound good, but it was a busy weekend there. The film’s best market was France, where it earned first place with $3.93 million on 625 screens.

Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again fell from second to fifth place with $27.2 million in 46 markets for a still early international total of $97.4 million. The film’s only major market opening was in France, where it only managed fourth place with $1.76 million on 593 screens.

We are going to have another extended edition of the top five, because there are a few more films worth talking about below. Firstly, Incredibles 2 slipped to sixth place with $20.0 million in 41 markets for total of $423.7 million internationally and $996.6 million worldwide. The film had no major market debuts this weekend, but the film hit $1 billion worldwide on Tuesday. That’s amazing.

Skyscraper fell from first to seventh with $17.7 million in 68 markets for totals of $196.9 million internationally and $256.0 million worldwide. The film fell 85% during its second weekend in China with $6.99 million over the weekend for a total of $85.75 million. That’s a sharp decline and might spell the end for the film’s chances of breaking even any time soon.

Ant-Man and the Wasp landed in eighth place with $11.5 million in 50 markets for totals of $211.1 million internationally and $394.6 million worldwide. The film has nearly $400 million worldwide and it has opened in barely more than 60% of the international marketplace. It is on pace for more than $600 million at the global box office, which is a fantastic result for most films, but it is practically anemic compared to the rest of the MCU. Don’t get me wrong, it has already paid for its entire production budget and probably half of its advertising budget, but the MCU is so massive that even a monster hit like this looks small by comparison.

Finally, we come to Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom which added $11.8 million in 65 markets to its totals and now sits at $840.2 million internationally and $1.238 billion worldwide. The film fell 38% during its second weekend in Japan earning $6.74 million over the weekend for a two-week total of $31.63 million. The film is the 14th highest grossing film worldwide and is closing in on Beauty and the Beast for 13th place. We will continue to keep an eye on its progress.
