Ash vs. Evil Dead: Season Three

It’s a good week on the home market as we not only have a monster hit that is worth being a Pick of the Week contender, Deadpool 2, we have a wide selection of other contenders. This includes a limited release, First Reformed; an Anime title,Sakura Quest: Part Two; as well as a TV on DVD release, Ash vs. Evil Dead: Season Three. In the end, I went with Ash vs. Evil Dead: Season Three, but it was a close race.

Action Point - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: Blu-ray Combo Pack
Video on Demand
This is a Jackass movie, just without Jackass in the title. Also, it is much worse. Unless you are a hardcore fan of the franchise, you can safely skip this one.

Ash vs. Evil Dead: Season Three - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
Video on Demand
This season turned to be the last season, but does it go out with a bang? Or did it last a season too many? Read our review for my opinion.

Blindspot: Season Three - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD
The show has lost over 50% of its season one ratings in just two years, so I’m worried season four will be its last. Hopefully it will get a good send-off with a satisfying conclusion.

Blue Bloods: Season Eight - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD
The most recent season of this show I reviewed was season four and by that time I had mostly run out of things to say. It is a really consistent show with no bad episodes, but that also means it doesn’t stand out in any way either.

Deadpool 2 - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD, Blu-ray Combo Pack, or 4K Ultra HD Combo Pack
Video on Demand (Theatrical Cut) or Video on Demand (Unrated Cut)
I’m still waiting for the screener for this film. I loved the first film and I really hope that this one is, if not as good as its predecessor, it is at least close. Also coming out this week is a franchise Box Set. Since there will be more installments in the franchise, this seems a little premature.

Deep Rising - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
This is not technically a good movie, but I remember enjoying it when it first came out. Given its ranking in this week’s sales, I’m clearly not alone in liking the movie. Furthermore, the Anniversary edition is loaded with extras, so if you liked the movie, it is certainly worth picking up. If you just like B-movie action / horror films, then it is is also worth picking up.

First Reformed - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
Video on Demand
This film started out really well in limited release, but could not maintain its audience as it expanded. It is one of the best-reviewed films on this week’s list and while there are not a ton of extras (audio commentary track and one featurette) it is still a Pick of the Week contender.

Gamers!: The Complete Series - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: Blu-ray Combo Pack
An Anime series set in high school. It is about a boy who is an avid gamer and wants no other distractions in his life. Then he meets the president of the school’s gaming club, and she’s just as much into games as he is, so much so that he’s smitten. This is a high school romance Anime, but it’s done well. There are no substantial extras on the Blu-ray Combo Pack, but it is still worth picking up.

God’s Not Dead: A Light in Darkness - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray Combo Pack
Video on Demand
Even most fans of faith-based films will find a hard time dealing with this film. Skip it. Also coming out this week is a franchise box set, which is three installments of “Skip it.”

Gotham: The Complete Fourth Season - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray Combo Pack
I couldn’t get past the first few episodes and I’ve been told by people whose opinions I trust that it has gotten worse. The ratings would seem to back that up, as it has fallen out of the top 100. That said, the reviews are still good, so there are still fans. Extras include the ComicCon panel, two featurettes, and some deleted scenes.

Justice League - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD
When this movie first hit the home market, it didn’t have a stand-alone DVD release. This is that stand-alone DVD release. They are calling it a “Special Edition”, but that’s marketing hype. It wasn’t worth picking up when it came out on a Blu-ray Combo Pack and it isn’t worth picking up now.

NBA: 2018 Champions Golden State Warriors - No Reviews - Buy from Amazon: Blu-ray Combo Pack
Real fans want full games and not 70-minutes of highlights.

NCIS: The Fifteenth Season - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD
It has been several years since I watched this show. There have been too many changes in key cast members to keep up and with Pauley Perrette leaving at the end of this season, I have no interest in going back.

Sakura Quest: Part Two - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: Blu-ray Combo Pack
An Anime title about a young lady, Yoshino Koharu, who comes from a small town and really wants to get a job in Tokyo. Instead, she gets a job as “Queen of the Chupakabura” at a small town’s tourist board. The job starts poorly, because she was hired by mistake, what she thought was a short-term job is a year-long commitment, and frankly, she’s not good at her job. She does meet four locals and recruits them to be her “Ministers” and maybe the five of them will be able to turn things around. I bought the first part and liked it so much that I pre-ordered the second part right away. It won’t arrive for a while, as I bought it with another pre-order that doesn’t come out till November. Oops.

Show Dogs - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
Video on Demand
Even if you have kids in the right age range who like dogs, there are better options out there.

Site Unseen: An Emma Fielding Mystery - No Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD
It’s a Hallmark Channel original mystery movie. There are no reviews on Rotten Tomatoes, but if you are part of the target audience, you probably already know if you want to buy this DVD or not.

Summer Villa - No Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD
The second Hallmark Channel original movie on this week’s list, but it is a romance rather than a mystery. Again, there are no reviews, but the target audience know if they want it already.

The Terror: Season 1 - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
Video on Demand
An anthology horror series set during a disastrous attempt to find the Northwest Passage. The reviews are excellent, but the extras are not. (There’s a trio of featurettes with a total running time of less than 10 minutes.) It is still worth picking up, but it is not a Pick of the Week contender.

The Walking Dead: The Complete Eighth Season - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
The show is well off its peak when it comes to quality and ratings. Unless you are a hardcore fan of the show, you are likely watching it based on inertia or have already given up on it.

Wild at Heart - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
There are not a lot of secondary Blu-ray releases that really jump out has must haves. The original Heaven Can Wait is probably the best secondary Blu-ray release of the week.

4K Ultra HD Releases - Buy from Amazon:
Deadpool 2 - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: 4K Ultra HD Combo Pack
Deadpool Franchise Box Set - No Reviews - Buy from Amazon: 4K Ultra HD Combo Pack
Jack Ryan 5-Film Collection - No Reviews - Buy from Amazon: 4K Ultra HD Combo Pack
Two of the three 4K Ultra HD releases coming out this week are franchise box sets.

TV on DVD Megasets - Buy from Amazon:
Maigret - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD
Masters of Sex - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
Amazon claims the Maigret release is the 1991 series, but the cover clearly shows Rowan Atkinson, who starred in the 2016 / 2017 series.

Won’t You Be My Neighbor? is one of the best movies of the year, but it is worth buying on Blu-ray.
