August 29, 2018

Ant-Man and the Wasp

Ant-Man and the Wasp jumped into first place on the international chart earning $71.2 million in 28 markets for totals of $332.6 million internationally and $544.1 million worldwide. This past weekend, the film debuted in first place in China with $66.62 million over the weekend for a total opening of $68.14 million. This is the fourth biggest opening for the MCU in that market and 66% more than the original opened with. The film opens in Japan, its final market, next weekend. It should get to $600 million worldwide shortly after it debuts there.

The Meg slipped to second place with $35.0 million on 16,538 screens in 65 markets for totals of $306.5 million internationally and $411.6 million worldwide. The film did cost $150 million to make and even with $20 million in tax rebates, the film still needed to earn at least $400 million worldwide to have shot at breaking even any time soon. While it is running out of markets to open in, it has a good shot at $500 million worldwide. That will be enough to break even during its initial push into the home market. This past weekend, the film opened in first place in France with $4.7 million on 428 screens. Meanwhile, the film’s final opening comes in Japan on the 7th of September.

Hotel Transylvania 3: Summer Vacation remained in third place with $18.06 million on 15,982 screens in 82 markets for totals of $303.39 million internationally and $462.05 million worldwide. The film earned first place in Italy with $4.85 million on 689 screens over the weekend for a total opening of $6.13 million. By this time next weekend, this film will be the biggest hit in the franchise.

Big Brother opened in second place in China and fourth place internationally with $13.12 million.

Mission: Impossible—Fallout fell to fifth place with $13.0 million in 61 markets over the weekend for totals of $344.8 million internationally and $538.8 million worldwide. It is cruising on holdovers at the moment, but that changes this week when it debuts in China and Italy.

We continue our tracking of Incredibles 2 as it climbs the all-time chart. This weekend, it earned $7.9 million in 28 markets for totals of $543.9 million internationally and $1.141 billion worldwide. The film has entered the top 20 on the all-time chart, overtaking Transformers: Dark of the Moon, while it may have already overtaken The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King for 19th place.
