Limited and VOD Releases: Don’t Wait for Tomorrow to see a Limited Release

August 31, 2018

Inventing Tomorrow

It is a very busy week for limited releases, at least in terms of secondary VOD titles. There are only eight entries in the main list, and a couple of those didn’t have enough reviews, but I included anyway, because all of their reviews are currently positive. Inventing Tomorrow and Pick of the Litter are among a handful of documentaries that are worth checking out, as is Let the Corpses Tan.

Active Measures - Reviews
A very important documentary about Putin’s ongoing attempts to control as much of the global political sphere as possible, including what happened in the 2016 presidential election.

Alt-Right: Age of Rage - Reviews
A documentary about the Alt-Right, which is just the Neo Nazi movement with a more marketable name. On the one hand, it is important to expose these people and what they want to do to as wide as an audience as possible. On the other hand, I fear this will just be preaching to the choir, as those sympathetic to the Alt-Right are probably no longer reachable.

Destination Wedding - Reviews
Winona Ryder and Keanu Reeves star as two people who meet while they are on their way to the same destination wedding. They both hate everything about this weekend, including each other. The film’s Tomatometer Score is rather low, but the average score is 5.3 out of 10, so it is mediocre rather than terrible. It isn’t going to take long before it comes out on Video on Demand and if you are a fan of the two stars, then it might be worth a rental then.

Inventing Tomorrow - Reviews
A documentary about young inventors creating solutions for environmental problems. There are only seven reviews on Rotten Tomatoes, which would normally not be enough to be mentioned here. However, all seven reviews are positive and it is an inspirational documentary. If you get a chance to see it, please check it out.

Let the Corpses Tan - Reviews
This is the only film on this week’s list that both has dozens of reviews and overwhelmingly positive reviews. It’s a Belgian film that is an homage to the gritty Italian crime thrillers of the 1970s. I think the market for such a film is too small for it to thrive in limited release, but hopefully I’m wrong.

The Little Stranger - Reviews
This is one of the few limited release on this week’s list that’s earning a lot of pre-release buzz. Given its subject matter, it could have been an early Awards Season contender. However, the reviews are barely in the overall positive level. It might be a contender for some of the technical Oscars, as period pieces are at an advantage there, but I don’t think it will survive in limited release, especially since it is opening in nearly 500 theaters.

Pick of the Litter - Reviews
Video on Demand
A documentary about a group of dogs that are going through training to be seeing-eye guide dogs. The film is equal parts educational, informing the audiences about what it takes for dogs to become guide dogs, as well as equal parts footage of adorable puppies. If this works, we could see a whole new genre of adorable animals being used to teach people things. I’m looking forward to this future.

Ya Veremos - Reviews
There are not enough reviews for this movie to normally be mentioned here, plus all of the reviews are negative. However, it is one of the widest limited releases of the week, so I couldn’t ignore it. It is important to note that while all of the reviews are negative, they are not aggressively negative. Most critics agree it is mediocre, few claim it is truly bad. This means, its Tomatometer Score should climb as more reviews come in.

Secondary VOD Releases:
An Actor Prepares - Reviews - Video on Demand
Blood Fest - Reviews - Video On Demand
Boarding School - Reviews - Video on Demand
Chasing the Win - Reviews - Video on Demand
Pale Trees - No Reviews - Video On Demand
Reprisal - Reviews - Video on Demand
S.M.A.R.T. Chase - No Reviews - Video on Demand
There are seven secondary VOD releases this week. Of these, Blood Fest might be the best.
