Friday Estimates: Crazy Matches Expectations with $5.87 million

September 1, 2018

Crazy Rich Asians

Crazy Rich Asians will easily remain on top of the chart this weekend, as it earned $5.87 million on Friday. Depending on when you are reading this, it might have already crossed $100 million domestically, a milestone it will certainly reach by the end of business on Saturday. The film is on pace for $24 million over the three-day weekend and $30 million over four, matching our prediction perfectly.

The Meg earned $2.29 million on Friday putting it on pace for $10 million / $13 million over the weekend. This is within a rounding error of our prediction.

Searching did better than expected grabbing third place on Friday with $1.95 million. However, despite its reviews, its genre and target audience will result in a smaller internal multiplier than Operation Finale will earn, and certainly smaller than the holdovers. This will leave it just outside the top five with $5 million / $7 million.

Operation Finale isn’t doing as well as predicted, but it still managed fourth place on Friday with $1.72 million, putting it on pace for $6 million / $8 million over the weekend for a six-day debut of about $10 million. Its reviews and A minus from CinemaScore should help its legs, but its theater average is low enough that even good word-of-mouth won’t keep it in theaters for very long.

Both Mission: Impossible—Fallout ($1.56 million) and Christopher Robin ($1.22 million) will be in a close race for third place over the weekend. In fact, I wouldn’t be surprised if we have a split winner with one film earning third over the three-day weekend and another earning third over four.

Kin only managed $1.04 million on Friday, putting in on pace for just over $3 million over three days and just under $4 million over four. Its reviews won’t help, while it earned a B plus from CinemaScore, which is right on the boarder between merely okay and bad enough that its legs will suffer. That said, it will miss the Mendoza Line over the three-day weekend; in fact, it will miss the Mendoza Line even if you include Monday, so its word-of-mouth won’t matter.

On the limited release front, Ya Veremos earned $525,000 in 369, which is not a good start, but it isn’t a bomb either. On the other hand, The Little Stranger did bomb with just $117,000 in 474 theaters. It’s reviews weren’t great, but they were certainly not this bad. I think it is a case of opening too wide for a limited release.
