Theater Averages: To Infinity, or to the Top of the Chart, Whichever is Closer

September 13, 2018

Kusama: Infinity

Kusama: Infinity led the way on the theater average chart with an impressive $15,499 in two theaters. This isn’t enough to think it will earn a real measure of mainstream success, but it is the latest success story in a year of documentary hits. The Nun was in second place with an average of $13,882. The Hows of Us had arguably the most impressive limited opening of the weekend, as it earned an average of $12,895, while playing in 38 theaters.

There was a large gap between the $10,000 club and the rest of the other new limited releases. Bisbee ‘17 earned $6,650 in one theater over the weekend for a five-day opening of $9,062. The third documentary on this week’s list is Hal, which earned $5,150, also in one theater. I am Not a Witch opened with an average of $4,126 in two theaters over the weekend, but earned an average of $6,096 including previews. Limited releases rarely have previews, so I'm unsure which number is more appropriate. The Apparition missed the Mendoza Line with an average of $1,404 in 7 theaters. Meanwhile, Nelly was right behind with $1,304 in its lone theater.

This past week also saw milestones reached for a few Per Theater Chart alumni:

  • Juliet, Naked held on better than expected helping it get to $2 million over the weekend. It could get to $3 million as early as this weekend, while $4 million isn’t a real stretch.
  • Ya Veremos topped $3 million over the weekend and while it should get to $4 million, anything beyond that is likely asking for too much.
  • Searching expanded truly wide and that helped it hit $10 million over the weekend. It will continue to hit milestones for a few more weeks.
