International Box Office: Venom Claws Closer to Half a Billion Dollars

October 25, 2018

Venom

Venom earned its fourth first place finish on the international chart with $33.17 million on 14,966 screens in 83 markets for totals of $291.61 million internationally and $462.68 million worldwide. The film had no major market openings this past weekend, but it has yet to open in Japan and China, so it has a shot at $400 million internationally and $600 million worldwide, which would be more than enough to become Sony’s biggest hit released in 2018.

A Star is Born rose to second place with $23.5 million on 8,670 screens in 75 markets for totals of $75.6 million internationally and $201.7 million worldwide. Its only major market release of the weekend came in Australia, where it earned $4.29 million on 537 screens. This is better than its debut here, relative to the size of the two markets. Its biggest market overall is the U.K., where it has $19.40 million, including $3.76 million on 663 screens this past weekend.

Wu Shuang slipped to third place with $14.72 million in 7 markets over the weekend for a total of $164.48 million after four weeks of release. The film remained in first place in its native China with $13.56 million over the weekend for a four-week total of $158.77 million.

Smallfoot remained in fourth place with $14.4 million on 12,869 screens in 71 markets for totals of $71.2 million internationally and $137.5 million worldwide. The film opened in fifth place in China with $3.89 million on 4,928 screens. Animated films rarely do well in China, so this isn’t a terrible start compared to what it did here.

Halloween opened in fifth with $14.3 million in 23 markets. It did well in Mexico with $5.05 million on 849 screens, earning first place in the process. On the other hand, it only managed second place in both the U.K. ($3.47 million on 530 screens) and in Russia ($1.80 million on 1,141). It isn’t doing as well internationally as it did domestically, but it did so well domestically that it could earn nothing internationally and still be a financial success.
