Theater Averages: Playing Favourites

December 6, 2018

The Favourite

The Favourite remained on the top of the theater average chart with an average of $31,538 in 34 theaters. That would have been an amazing opening weekend. It was also the only film in the $10,000 club, with the next best film being Shoplifters with an average of $6,971 in 14 theaters. The best new release of the week was Sicilian Ghost Story, which opened with $4,324 in its lone theater.

The next best new limited release was Head Full of Honey, which barely missed the Mendoza Line with an average of $2,179 in 4 theaters. Unstoppable was not as lucky with an average of $1,915 in 22 theaters. Finally there’s Mirai, which played in 20 to 71 theaters, depending on what day of the weekend it was. This makes dealing with its theater average of little more difficult. Adding up the daily averages gets us a weekend average of $1,255, but even then that doesn’t take into account limited screenings.

This past week also saw milestones reached for a few Per Theater Chart alumni:

  • The Favourite hit $1 million during its second weekend of release and it will continue to expand and reach many more milestones.
  • Boy Erased topped $5 million early in the weekend and should get to $6 million by this time next week. However, its theater average plummeted this past weekend, so it will start to lose theaters quickly.
  • Free Solo made it all the way to $10 million over the weekend. This is amazing for a documentary, but that’s as far as it will go.
  • Green Book hit $10 million just before the weekend and was nearly at $15 million by the end of the weekend.
