Theater Averages: Box Office Feels the Winter Chill

December 27, 2018

Cold War

There were not many new limited releases releases, which let If Beale Street Could Talk remain on top with an average of $21,853 in five theaters. Cold War was the best of the new releases with an average of $18,118 in three theaters. The only other film in the $10,000 club over the weekend was Aquaman with an average of $16,485. Two films had averages of over $10,000 during their Christmas Day debuts, On the Basis of Sex (average of $14,483 in 33 theaters) and Destroyer (average of $10,246 in three).

There were almost no other new limited releases to talk about. The Last Resort opened with an average of $4,140 in two theaters. Swing Kids struggled with an average of just $2,930 in 15.

This past week also saw milestones reached for a few Per Theater Chart alumni:

  • Wildlife reached $1 million after ten weeks of release. That’s as far as it will go, but this is still very impressive for a limited release.
  • Mary Queen of Scots expanded nationwide and that helped it get to $3 million over the weekend. However, its theater average is low enough that it won’t expand significantly beyond this point.
  • The Favourite also expanded nationwide helping it get all the way to $10 million. It too will not expand significantly beyond this point, not unless it does really well during Awards Season.
  • Green Book got all the way to $25 million before the weekend and is already nearly halfway to $30 million.
