January 10, 2019

Destroyer

Destroyer rose to first place on the theater average chart with an average of $16,383 in six theaters. Cold War actually saw its average grow to $15,127, also in six theaters. Last week’s winner, On the Basis of Sex was next with an average of $14,370 in 112 theaters. It’s rare for a limited release to land in the $10,000 club while playing in more than 100 theaters. The final member of the $10,000 club was Stan and Ollie with an average of $10,920 in 8 theaters.

The best of the new limited releases was The Nun, and it was re-release. The film earned $6,273 in one theater. The best true new release was Mojin: The Worm Valley with an average of $2,975 in 17 theaters. State Like Sleep only managed an average of $281 in 10 theaters, but it was playing on VOD, so its theatrical numbers were entirely irrelevant.

This past week also saw milestones reached for a few Per Theater Chart alumni:

  • Ben is Back got to $2 million before the weekend and was halfway to $3 million by the end of the weekend.
  • On the Basis of Sex hit $3 million during the weekend and it is still in the $10,000 club, so it will continue to grow at the box office.
  • Simmba reached $4 million during just its second weekend of release.
  • If Beale Street Could Talk also reached $4 million over the weekend, but it has a better chance at expanding and reaching more milestones.
  • Mary Queen of Scots managed to get all the way to $10 million before the weekend and it was already more than halfway to $15 million by the end of the weekend.
  • Green Book got all the way to $35 million and it is not done, not with its performance during Awards Season so far.
