Theater Averages: Dragons Look Down on the Other New Releases

February 27, 2019

How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World

How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World was the only film in the $10,000 Club earning an average of $13,506. The best limited release was Wrestle, which earned $6,027 in its lone theater.

There were very few other new limited releases, but at least none of them bombed. The Iron Orchard managed an average of $5,733 in 8 theaters, despite its reviews. Total Dhamaal earned just under $1 million in just over 200 theaters for an average of $4,898. That’s excellent for this type of release. The widest limited release of the week was Run the Race. This film earned an average of $2,533 in 853 theaters. A lot of films playing in that many theaters would open below the Mendoza Line.

This past week also saw milestones reached for a few Per Theater Chart alumni:

  • Arctic just got to $1 million over the weekend. It might get to $2 million, but its theater average is low enough that it might lose theaters too fast to get there.
  • Cafarnaúm also reached $1 million, doing so before the weekend. It is losing theaters, but there’s a possibility it could have the legs to get to $2 million.
  • Gully Boy hit $2 million over the weekend. Most films would have an easy time getting to $3 million and $4 million after a start like this, but Bollywood films have a tendency to suddenly collapse as theaters drop them en masse for the next release.
  • 2019 Oscar Shorts hit $3 million during the weekend. However, since the Oscars are over, its chances of getting to $4 million are very slim.
  • Uri: The Surgical Strike topped $4 million before the weekend, but that’s as far as it will go.
  • As expected, Cold War got to $4 million over the weekend and $5 million is within reach.
  • Stan and Ollie just made it to $5 million over the weekend, but it would take a minor miracle to get to $6 million.
