How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World

How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World returned to first place on the international chart in almost exactly a month. It earned $54.9 million in 60 markets for totals of $280.9 million internationally and $378.6 million worldwide. The film debuted in first place in China with $33.38 million in approximately 10,000 theaters. It has yet to open in Japan and could break even before it gets there. It depends on how long its legs are and how much its advertising budget was.

Alita: Battle Angel fell to second place with $40.41 in 81 markets for totals of $278.22 million internationally and $350.67 million worldwide. The film fell just over 60% in China, down to $24.2 million over the weekend for a two-week total of $112.1 million. This isn’t a bad decline for this market, especially since there were two major Hollywood releases that opened there this past weekend. The film will have no trouble getting to $400 million worldwide, but it needed $500 million to have a chance of breaking even any time soon.

Green Book was next with $34.03 million on 5,144 screens in 63 markets for totals of $114.36 million internationally and $190.14 million worldwide. The film debuted in China with $17.30 million, while it earned $2.62 million on 180 screens in Japan.

The Wandering Earth fell to fourth place with $14.9 million over the weekend, for totals of $668.1 million in its native China and $673.10 million worldwide.

Escape Room managed to grab fifth place with $6.76 million on 2,139 screens in 73 markets for totals of $70.52 million internationally and $126.84 million worldwide. The film debuted in two major markets this past weekend, but struggled in both. It only managed sixth place in France with $1.88 million on 229 screens over the weekend for a total opening of $1.98 million. It placed fourth in Germany, but with just $1.21 million on 330 screens over the weekend for a total opening of $1.32 million. However, while this might not seem impressive, you have to remember the film reportedly only cost $9 million to make, so even if its advertising was more than triple that, it has still already broken even.
