Thursday Night Previews: Five Feet Barely Ahead of Wonder Park

March 15, 2019

Five Feet Apart

As expected, Five Feet Apart led the way when it came to previews; however, Wonder Park made it a very close race. The young adult adaptation earned $715,000 during its previews, which isn’t a good start for a film like this. Then again, it has been a while since this genre had a good start. Unfortunately, the film’s reviews are not good enough to suggest things will turn around during the rest of the weekend. That said, it likely won’t miss our prediction by a huge margin either.

Wonder Park was right behind with $700,000. This is more impressive, because family films rarely do well during previews, as their target audience still has to go to school the next morning. The film’s reviews have slipped below 30% positive and this could scare away some families. On the other hand, films aimed at kids this young tend to struggle more with critics and the film’s CinemaScore could still be in the A-range.

Captive State was well back with $300,000. Worse still, of the three films opening wide this weekend, this one is the one that should be the most front-loaded, as its target audience is much more likely to rush out to see a film opening night. Granted, its reviews are also the best, but they are barely in the overall positive range, so they aren’t enough to turn things around.
