Limited and VOD Releases: New Releases have Gone Screwy

It’s another short week for limited releases. That said, five of the seven films on this week’s list are earning 80% positive reviews or better, so what we lack in quantity, we make up for with quality. On the downside, the film with the best reviews, Diane, is also playing on Video on Demand, so its box office chances are not great.

The Brink - Reviews
 A documentary about Steven Bannon, who is one of the more vile political figures around. The reviews are good, perhaps good enough to thrive in limited release. However, I’m not sure enough people are interested in a political documentary about this man.

Diane - Reviews

Mary Kay Place stars as a selfless woman whose past threatens to catch up with her. This film’s reviews are the best on this week’s list, but it is playing on VOD, so its box office chances are weak.

The Highwaymen - Reviews
 A movie that focuses on the two FBI agents that helped track down Bonnie and Clyde. The buzz is louder than most limited releases get and it has more star power as well; however, the reviews are mixed. This would be fine if the film were opening wide, but it likely won’t make an impact at the box office, not in limited release.

Screwball - Reviews
 A documentary about the MLB doping scandal focusing the doctor and the “health clinic” at the center of it. We’ve had some recent documentary success stories at the box office and this film’s reviews suggest it has a chance to become the latest box office hit for the genre.

Trinity Seven: Heavens Library & Crimson Lord - No Reviews
 A theatrical release for the Anime series. There are no reviews for the movie on Rotten Tomatoes at the moment, but the TV show earned good reviews on My Anime List.

A Vigilante - Reviews
 Olivia Wilde stars as an abused woman who turns to vigilantism to protect others and to kill her abusive husband. The reviews are excellent, with critics praising Olivia Wilde’s performance in particular. Perhaps they will be enough to thrive in limited release.

Working Woman - Reviews
 Liron Ben-Shluch plays a wife and mother who works as a real estate developer. However, she not only has to balance her work and home life, she has to deal with increasing sexual harassment from her boss. The reviews are among the best on this week’s list and it could find a home on the art house circuit.

Secondary VOD Releases:
There’s only one film playing on VOD on this week’s list, and it is the best-reviewed film above.
