Theater Averages: John Wick Denied a Souvenir

May 23, 2019

The Souvenir

There were only two films in the $10,000 club this past weekend, The Souvenir and John Wick: Chapter 3 - Parabellum. The former earned an average of $19,600 in four theaters, while the latter earned an average of $14,758 in close to 4,000 theaters.

The best of the rest of the new limited releases was actually a really old film. Last Year at Marienbad earned $7,644 in its lone theater during its re-release. Walking on Water did well with an average of $5,327 in two theaters. De De Pyaar De was by far the biggest limited release of the week earning an average of $4,096 in 104 theaters. The Third Wife had a similar debut average with $3,339 in one theater over the weekend for a five-day opening of $6,706. Zilla and Zoe only managed an average of $2,848 in four theaters over the weekend, but it was playing on VOD, so this is better than expected. Photograph struggled with an average of $2,754 in 13 theaters.

Sadly, there were also several films that missed the Mendoza Line, starting with Shed of the Dead and its average of $1,896 in 10 theaters. Aniara had a near identical opening weekend, but it was playing in 19 theaters leading to an average of just $1,016. Trial by Fire was the widest release of the week playing in 109 theaters, but it only managed an average of $722. Finally, Slaughterhouse Rulez only managed an average of $215 in 10 theaters, but it was also playing on VOD, so its box office numbers are immaterial.

There was only one major milestone this past week, as Red Joan crossed $1 million just before the start of the weekend. It only has a very slim shot at $2 million.
