Once Upon a Time... In Hollywood

Once Upon a Time... In Hollywood started its international run in earnest with $48.53 million over the three-day weekend, $55.22 million including previews and weekdays. It was playing on 10,054 screens in 59 markets and has a running tally of $65.44 million after two weeks of release. Its biggest market of the weekend was either France or the U.K., depending on how you look at it. In the former, it earned first place with $7.08 million on 683 screens. It also opened in first place in the latter with $6.22 million on 708 screens over the weekend, and had a total opening of $9.16 million. It also had strong openings in Germany ($5.06 million on 820 screens over the weekend for a total opening of $5.82 million); Australia ($4.52 million on 299 screens); and Spain ($2.41 million on 869 screens over the weekend for a total opening of $3.63 million).

Fast and Furious Presents: Hobbs and Shaw remained in second place, again, this time earning $45.9 million in 67 markets for totals of $304.9 million internationally and $438.6 million worldwide. The film debuted in South Korea with $8.58 million on 1,311 screens over the weekend for a total opening of $15.18 million. This is the best opening in the franchise in this market, which is a nice change of pace, as the film has struggled compared to the most recent installments in nearly every other market. The film opens in China this weekend and should do better there than it did domestically, putting it on pace for $700 million worldwide.

Nezha remained in first place in its native China, but slipped to third place internationally with $42.26 million over the weekend for a month-long total of $597.88 million. It is now the third-highest-grossing film in China, overtaking Avengers: Endgame in the process. Up next is The Wandering Earth, but that might be asking too much, as it is still about $100 million behind that film.

The Lion King continues it march to $1 billion internationally. This weekend it was down just 38% to $33.8 million in 54 markets for totals of $939.1 million internationally and $1.435 billion worldwide. There were no new markets to report on, but the film was down just 15% in Japan and already has $31.7 million in that market. Granted, films in Japan tend to have long legs and it was the Odon holiday, but this is still an impressive result. The film opens in Italy this weekend and it is practically guaranteed to hit $1 billion on the international chart shortly afterward.

The Angry Birds Movie 2 rounded out the top five, maybe. It’s complicated. This film earned $18.45 million over the three-day weekend and $18.58 million including previews and weekday opening numbers. Most studios just include those numbers as part of the three-day weekend, but Sony separates them out. If you do just look at the three-day numbers, then Bodies At Rest earned fifth place with $18.45 million in its native China. Speaking of China, The Angry Birds Movie 2 opened with $9.54 million over the weekend in that market for a total opening of $10.05 million. That’s not a bad debut for an animated film there.

Toy Story 4 finally made it to $1 billion worldwide, doing so before the weekend. Over the weekend, it earned $8.6 million in 36 markets for totals of $592.2 million internationally and $1.017 million worldwide. The film only managed third place in Germany with $2.2 million, which is a very disappointing start, but it doesn’t matter given its $1 billion run.
