Hobbs and Shaw

Fast and Furious Presents: Hobbs and Shaw roared back into first place on the international chart earning $119.4 million in 68 markets for totals of $440.4 million internationally and $588.1 million worldwide. This includes a first place, three-day $99.08 million debut in China, for a total opening in the market of $103.06 million. Granted, films tend to have short legs in China, but a start like this will still give the film an easy time reaching $700 million worldwide, which is enough to be a financial success, even if it doesn’t match the previous installments in the franchise.

The Lion King rose to second place with $30.0 million in 56 markets over the weekend for totals of $997.9 million internationally and $1.509 billion worldwide. This includes a five-day, $15.9 million opening in Italy, the second biggest debut in that market for a Disney film, behind only Avengers: Endgame.

Once Upon a Time... In Hollywood slipped to third place with $28.0 million in 55 markets over the weekend for totals of $116.6 million internationally and $239.8 million worldwide. The film cost $90 million to make, so it still needs to earn a bit more to break even, but it will get there. It might have to wait till the home market though, depending on its advertising budget.

Nezha was pushed into second place in its native China, but still managed $24.03 million over the weekend for a total of $651.21 million after six weeks of release. It’s quickly catching up to The Wandering Earth for biggest hit of the year in China and second biggest of all time. It’s not a sure thing to get there, but its chances have improved to over 50%.

The Angry Birds Movie 2 rounded out the top five, again, with $10.39 million in 62 markets over the weekend for a total of $47.83 million so far. It wasn’t able to crack $1 million in any of its new markets, but came close in India with $923,000 on 1,159 screens. Its biggest holdover was China, where it added $2.04 million on 1,900 screens over the weekend for a two-week total of $16.40 million there.
