Hobbs and Shaw

Fast and Furious Presents: Hobbs and Shaw had a very steep decline in China, but still managed to earn first place on the international chart with $37.9 million in 68 markets over the weekend for totals of $528.7 million internationally and $$687.9 million worldwide. The film plummeted 72% during its second weekend in China earning $27.65 million for a two-week total of $170.36 million. This drop-off is extreme, even for China. However, it doesn’t matter. The movie will hit $200 million in that market and $700 million worldwide, which is more than enough to break even and get yet another installment in the franchise.

Once Upon a Time... In Hollywood rose to second place with $22.08 million on 9,797 screens in 78 markets for totals of $150.87 million internationally and $280.61 million worldwide. The film’s biggest opening came in Japan, but it only managed sixth place there with $2.13 million on 217 screens over the weekend for a total opening of $2.83 million. Its biggest holdover was France where it scored second place with $2.46 million on 727 screens over the weekend for a three-week total of $15.82 million.

The Lion King was right behind with $20.6 million in 53 markets over the weekend for totals of $1.041 billion internationally and $1.562 billion worldwide. The film is coasting on holdovers and will soon fall out of the top five internationally. That said, it is one of the biggest hits of all time, so Disney should be very happy with this result.

Nezha overtook The Wandering Earth to become the biggest hit of the year in China and second biggest of all time. This past weekend it earned $16.69 million for a total of $685.72 million after seven weeks of release. It fell just 30%, which is an amazing hold in that market, even for a film that has been out in theaters that long.

Angel Has Fallen reached in the international top five for the first time in its run with $12.78 million in 43 markets for a still early international total of $28.74 million. Its biggest opening of the weekend came in Mexico, but it only made $1.65 million there. That’s not a great start, but is is a little better than the $1.32 million London Has Fallen made in that market.
