Home Market Releases for September 24th, 2019

Midsommar

It is a horrible week on the home market, at least from my perspective. There are no monster hits to talk about, but a flood of middling releases that I can’t really ignore. The biggest first-run release of the week is Yesterday and it is the closest we have to a Pick of the Week contender on this week’s list. That is if you don’t count Crawl and Midsommar, which are hitting VOD this week.

101 Dalmatians - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: Blu-ray Combo Pack
Video on Demand (Movie Only)
Video on Demand (With Extras)
One of two Signature Collection releases this week. Both are classics, but I can’t help thinking that there will be a 4K release sooner rather than later, so this could turn out to be a stop-gap release rather that something really worth buying.

American Horror Story: Apocalypse - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD
Video on Demand
Apparently the most recent season is amazing, but this one is just mostly okay. It is one of the best-selling new releases of the week, on the other hand.

Anna - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD, Blu-ray Combo Pack, 4K Ultra HD Combo Pack
This film is too similar to Atomic Blonde to stand out, while it is not nearly as good to work on its own.

Child’s Play - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
Video on Demand
This isn’t a bad movie, but the switch from magic to technology wasn’t necessary and didn’t add anything to the movie. In fact, since the target audience is full of technophiles, making yet another “What if technology is bad?!” movie was likely a mistake. This could explain why it missed expectations at the box office. Or it could have missed expectations simply because it was a horror remake and those have struggled recently.

Daughter of the Wolf - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD
Video on Demand
This film earned really weak reviews and didn’t do anything in theaters. This explains why it is only getting a DVD release this week. It doesn’t explain why it is selling so well on Amazon.

Elementary: Season Seven

Elementary: Season Seven - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: The Final Season and The Complete Series
The DVD screener arrived late, well, not really. It arrived last Monday, which is technically not late, but not early enough to to get a review done on time. Was it worth the wait? Or has the show overstayed its welcome? Read our review for my opinion.

Pavarotti - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: Blu-ray Combo Pack
This is one of the biggest documentaries to come out this year earning nearly $5 million. On the other hand, while its Tomatometer Score is 86% positive, its average review score is under 7 out of 10, so it is definitely in the “Liked but not loved” category. The lack of extras prevents it from being a Pick of the Week contender, but it is still worth picking up.

Shaft - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray Combo Pack
This film missed expectations, both with critics and in theaters. There are not a lot of extras, just a couple of featurettes, some deleted scenes, and outtakes. If you are a fan of the franchise, then maybe it is worth checking out, but that’s as far as I can go.

Sleeping Beauty - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: Blu-ray
Video on Demand (Movie Only)
Video on Demand (With Extras)
The second Disney Signature Collection release of the week. Like the previous one, this one is a classic, where the villain steals the show. However, I think this is a placeholder release and a bigger 4K release is on its way.

Star Wars
A New Hope - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: Blu-ray
The Empire Strikes Back - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: Blu-ray
Return of the Jedi - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: Blu-ray
The Phantom Menace - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: Blu-ray
Attack of the Clones - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: Blu-ray
Revenge of the Sith - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: Blu-ray
The Force Awakens - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: Blu-ray
Rogue One - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: Blu-ray
The Last Jedi - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: Blu-ray
Solo - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: Blu-ray
Every live-action film in the Star Wars franchise comes out on Blu-ray this week. I can’t image there are a lot of fans of this franchise that don’t already own these movies. I personally own most of them at least three times.

Yesterday - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD, Blu-ray Combo Pack, or 4K Ultra HD Combo Pack
Video on Demand
This film earned good reviews, but not great reviews. However, the main complaint seems to be what the film isn’t and not what it is. In the movie, there’s an event that causes a global blackout and the next day, Jack Malik discovers he’s the only one to remember the Beatles and decides to release their music as his own. The idea of a world without The Beatles is a fascinating idea and looking at how the world would have changed could fill a dozen movies. However, this movie doesn’t look at that question at all and it is instead an exploration of the Impostor Syndrome, which is the nagging feeling that no matter how talented you are, you are not talented enough and soon people will find out you’re an impostor. These are two totally different ways to approach the subject of The Beatles disappearing from history, but as long as you know it is the latter going in, then the movie is really good. There is also a ton of extras on the DVD / Blu-ray, easily enough to be worth picking up, but it is still not quite a Pick of the Week contender.
